Assurance & Advisory (A&A) is Teck’s internal audit enterprise function, which reports directly to the Audit Committee of Teck’s Board of Directors. The Assurance Senior role will report to the A&A Manager. The successful candidate will be an experienced assurance/audit professional, specifically with experience in conducting risk and control audits in accordance with Sarbanes Oxley (SOX) / NI 52-109 (CSOX) and holds a CPA designation from a professional accounting firm or equivalent experience in industry. Applicants must be bilingual in Spanish and English and have a natural curiosity to understand how risks are managed and a passion for continuous improvement.

 

A&A team’s vision is to be trusted and insightful business partners, that deliver actionable and timely risk, control and governance insights and foresights to support Teck’s strategic objectives of core excellence and resilience and enable desired business performance outcomes. The A&A team operates as a multi-disciplinary pool of resources, who work in project teams to deliver risk-based assurance engagements, which include the annual audit of Internal Control over Financial Reporting (ICFR) and quarterly audit of Disclosure Processes & Controls (DC&P). As a valued member of the A&A Team, the Assurance Senior will interact with Teck’s operations, development projects, and supporting enterprise business functions around the world. The A&A Team works with both internal and external customers to deliver the annual risk-based internal audit plan to drive and promote positive change through our actionable insights. This role will also support the delivery of initiatives with peers in the Team to enable the achievement of our function’s strategic objectives.

Responsibilities

 

  • Being a courageous safety leader, adhere to and champion business ethics, safety, and environmental standards through interactions with the business.
  • The successful candidate will primarily support the Assurance Manager with delivery and oversight of the annual ICFR audit (SOX and CSOX), including planning, mobilizing resources, preparation of work papers, quality assurance reviews, reporting results to management and external auditors and supporting the maintenance and reporting of audit KPIs.
  • In addition to ICFR, the Assurance Senior will be expected to support and/or lead other compliance audits, strategic risk- assurance reviews, advisory engagements or other special projects through the engagement lifecycle (planning, delivery and reporting) pertaining to mining operations or supporting functions such as Commercial, Projects, Finance, IT, Legal, Sustainability and Human Resources.
  • Documenting, analyzing, communicating, and presenting observations and root causes of issues related to engagement procedures with customers at various levels within the organization.
  • Assisting management with the identification and assessment of risks and controls, or process improvements to achieve organizational objectives.
  • Developing recommendations that will strengthen the Company's overall systems of internal control or assist in improving the efficiency, effectiveness, profitability or achievement of other objectives.
  • Following up with management to ensure agreed remediation actions, resulting from audit and assurance engagements, have been properly implemented.
  • Assisting A&A leadership Team with ad-hoc audits and investigations, and leading strategic continuous improvement initiatives as assigned.
  • Continuously develop an understanding of Teck’s operations, functions, and key development projects, as well as the commodities and metals mining industry more generally.

Qualifications: Education & Experience

 

  • Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation is required 
  • Big 4 / Professional Audit Services Firm experience in completing audits in accordance with SOX required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, commerce, finance, and accounting
  • Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) or Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) designation is desirable but not required.

Other Qualifications

 

  • Business level fluency in both English and Spanish is required.
  • Natural curiosity to learn and understand how business value drivers, risks, processes, and controls work and demonstrated ability to leverage innovative approaches to evaluating, deconstructing business challenges, thinking critically to creatively solve problems in an ever-changing environment is a must. Can manage ambiguity and is able to synthesize complex information, clarify uncertainties and systematically process them to incorporate into deliverables.
  • Demonstrated drive towards service excellence for both departmental and internal customers. Build effective relationships to understand different customers’ needs and objectives, to ensure A&A services consistently meet or exceed expectations.
  • Demonstrated ability of active listening and recognizes the value and is respectful and inclusive of diverse perspectives and can deliver key messages as intended, both orally and in writing in English and Spanish are a must. Agility and flexibility in communication style to meet the needs of the audience.
  • Demonstrated openness to change and feedback, and the ability to adjust behaviors in order respond to dynamic environments, information, or situations. Includes being self-aware, showing up with high emotional intelligence, and has demonstrated ability to be resilient in times of change.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and influence team members, internal/external customers with various backgrounds and at different levels in the organization to achieve outcomes that align with strategic direction is a must.
  • Holds self and others accountable for commitments, including demonstrated ability to self-manage and communicate with internal and external customers on progress or delays to commitments to manage expectations, connects with the purpose and values of the organization, and self-driven.
  • Understanding of ethics, risk management, internal controls and, practical ethical decision making is a must. Experience with risk management, designing, assessing internal controls is required. Strong command of the Sarbanes Oxley Act or similar compliance experience is a must. Familiarity with internal control frameworks (such as ISO, COSO, SOC2 and COBIT) and experience in risk management processes is desirable.
  • General Business Acumen: Understands and interprets financial and business data to identify key business drivers that influence performance. Leverages this acumen to both identify and drive business-process continuous improvement.
  • Ability to understanding Teck’s information technology landscape and the governance, risk, and controls best practices is considered an asset.
  • Data fluency demonstrated through ability to read, use, explore, analyze, interpret and communicate data to draw insights to influence decision making, including Power BI experience, considered an asset.
  • Mining Industry Experience / or extractive industry experience and related risks is an advantage.

Environmental and Physical Demands

 

  • Ability to work independently, be self-motivated and prepared to travel to remote locations.
  • Expected travel ranges from 5% to 30% and some work at high altitude (requiring an altitude test), with operating sites and administration offices primarily located in Canada, the U.S., Chile and Peru, and must have a valid driver’s license and be willing to drive.

Salary Range: $105,000 - $129,000 

 

The actual base salary offered is determined based on the successful candidate’s relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity.
