Senior Geologist

Teck is looking for a highly motivated, collaborative and innovative Senior Geologist to deliver success in a greenfields discovery role, based in Perth, Australia. This role will report to the Manager, Exploration - Australia and is responsible for leading project generation efforts throughout Australia and also Asia-Pacific and Africa. The role will identify and deliver new discovery opportunities to Teck through cutting-edge geoscience knowledge, innovation and high-quality interpretation from diverse data sets.  The role will also work closely with existing subject matter experts and internal project evaluators assessing commercial opportunities in order to upgrade Teck’s discovery portfolio in the region.  The role will also require proactive engagement of existing project focused staff to ensure that new technical ideas, concepts and workflows are integrated across the project stages.

We are seeking a dynamic, experienced exploration professional with strong technical skills in ore deposit geology, mineral system thinking, and exploration targeting, having a results-driven record in discovery and project execution, and the ability to collaborate across various support functions and global teams. A strong exploration background in project generation (regional area selection, targeting, and opportunity identification, evaluation and capture), underpinned by commercial acumen, is highly desirable.  The preferred candidate will also demonstrate their innovative and strategic nature with respect to mineral exploration activities. Specific exploration experience and expertise in Porphyry Copper and/or Sediment-Hosted base metals systems is required. Familiarity with Australia, Asian and African geology is considered an asset. 

About the Role:
 

  • Lead project generation activities in the region by applying Mineral System concepts to generate and assess province to district scale opportunities that feed the project pipeline in Australia and broader region.
  • Compile, integrate, interpret, and assess geoscientific datasets in order to develop regional geoscience targeting frameworks and make recommendations to the Exploration management team.
  • Collaborate with the Director – Global Project Generation, the Regional Chief Geoscientist – Europe & Australasia and other geoscience teams and support functions to drive the internal practice of regional area selection and targeting, project rating and prioritization, and project capture and execution.
  • Participate in, and provide guidance to, commercial evaluation teams and liaise with the Exploration management team to identify new discovery opportunities.
  • Stay abreast of technical research into relevant geoscience and ore deposit studies and integrate key learnings into project generation objectives.
  • Maintain a broad national network of industry, government and academic contacts to gain technical and commercial intelligence to assist in the capture of new opportunities in a timely manner.
  • Foster a culture of teamwork and innovation across all constituents and partners and encourage cooperation and open communication.
  • Contribute to internal team technical development via formal and informal communication, training and knowledge sharing.
  • Promote and incorporate the company’s commitment to health and safety, sustainability, the environment, and ensure Teck’s standards are met in the region.


About You:
 

  • A minimum of 12 years of geoscience experience, including significant experience in project generation.
  • A university degree in geoscience or a related field is required. A relevant, advanced degree (MSc or PhD) is preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively at a variety of scales: guide exploration activities and evaluations at continent, province, district or deposit scales.
  • Demonstrated experience of effectively leading and collaborating with teams as well as driving change.
  • Results oriented with excellent organizational, planning, management and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent communication, facilitation and interpersonal skills and experience working with a broad range of people.
  • Extensive experience in working on Porphyry Copper and/or Sediment Hosted base metal systems. 
  • Advanced written and oral English language skills is required.
  • Ability to travel within the region as required.
