Lead, Health, Safety and Environment

Summary

This role will be based in Perth, Australia and reporting directly to the Manager, Exploration – Australia, with a dotted line to the Manager, Health and Safety. Teamwork and proactive communication with the exploration team and Teck Exploration and Geoscience health, safety and environment leads globally will be fundamental drivers of success.

 

The Lead, Health, Safety & Environment has responsibility for leading the health, safety and environment (HSE) function for the Australian Exploration team, ensuring continuous improvement and compliance with Teck’s policies, processes, and relevant Australian legislation. The incumbent will have a good understanding of mineral exploration activities working in remote regions of Australia.

 

Key to the Role is Ensuring:

  • Exploration staff have the vital understanding, training, and tools to fulfill their designated health and safety responsibilities
  • Project leaders and Country management are provided with support to meet their health and safety accountabilities through guidance, advice, and verification processes
  • Project activities are conducted in alignment with expectations of Teck Resources Limited, Teck Exploration and country legal requirements
  • Oversight of, and support to, site contractors

Responsibilities

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Ensure activities are consistent with Teck’s policies and management systems, as guided by the Charter of Corporate Responsibility, the Code of Sustainable Conduct and the Health and Safety Policy
  • Proactively engage and provide leadership for Exploration to drive continuous improvement of the health safety and environment management system
  • Lead and coordinate the implementation of corporate health, safety, and environment programs as part of the corporate HSE strategies
  • Understand the principles of hazard identification, risk assessment and risk mitigation and more specifically:
  • Review existing processes and recommends changes as the need arises
  • Recognize health, safety and environmental hazards and work to manage associated risks in the workplace
  • Work with managers and project leads to implement hazard identification processes and appropriate risk mitigation measures, and review and modify specific processes as required
  • Ensure a comprehensive adoption of Teck Critical Control Standards throughout all projects in Australia
  • Develop and review safe work procedures for the broad spectrum of exploration activities within Australia
  • Develop H&S Plans to address Teck & legal requirements in Australia projects
  • Complete periodic inspections and audits for worksites, equipment, and management systems
  • Lead all aspects of the implementation and execution of critical control verification processes
  • Support the project leads in completing projects through the development of risk assessments, inductions, emergency response plans and simulations
  • Coordinate and maintain relevant training for the Australian exploration team including conducting routine needs assessments to resolve appropriate training
  • Document all workplace HSE incidents, investigations and apply corrective actions when necessary
  • Report on leading and lagging indicators and project metrics using available exploration and geoscience, and corporate systems and tools; promote the development of new data capture systems and data visualization platforms
  • Maintain HSE databases, web portals and local SharePoint sites
  • Develop and lead annual HSE budgets and input on project budgets
  • Plan and implement HSE learning team activities annually and throughout the year
  • Health, safety, and environment onboarding for new employees
  • Ensure compliance with the requirements established for contractor management
  • Ensure established processes for change management
  • Coordinate the collection of base-line environmental data for projects and maintains environmental monitoring programs as per corporate guidelines and regulatory requirements
  • Promote the focus on occupational health and hygiene exposure recognition, monitoring, and mitigation; responsible for identifying all exposure groups and handling subsequent mitigation measures
  • Keep abreast of state and jurisdictional regulatory changes in relation to HSE, and communicate such changes to the Exploration Manager
  • Maintain the country legal obligations register and coordinate associated compliance activities

Qualifications

  • Hold a minimum Certificate IV in Worker Health & Safety, or equivalent

  • A minimum of seven years of health, safety, and environment experience on exploration projects with exposure to various types of drilling rigs, geophysics tools and other exploration activities

  • A good understanding of the regulatory framework associated with appropriate local, national, and international health, safety, and environmental legislations

  • Intermediate to sophisticated knowledge of the principles of hazard identification, risk assessment and risk mitigation

  • Demonstrated auditing and inspection skills

  • HSEC Management Systems knowledge and experience

  • Proven track record to engage with multiple partners internal across Teck and external government agencies

  • Experience with handling budgets and forecasting

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Intermediate level proficiency with Microsoft Office products

  • Proficient written and verbal English language skills
