About the Role:

Based in the Perth Office, the Community Relations Specialist is responsible for providing training, support and counsel to both Project teams and Country Management to ensure the effective and successful implementation of all aspects of Social Responsibility. The key aspects of the role are:
 

  • Establishing project-specific community engagement and country-wide communication plans 
  • Facilitating project and country-level social risk assessments
  • Leading engagement with community and indigenous groups and associated engagement tracking processes
  • Coordinate and actively champion local benefits from employment opportunities and procurement from project activities 
  • Oversee community investment initiatives
  • Implement social emergency response plans and grievance mechanisms, ensuring effective and successful resolution 
  • Promote awareness around cultural heritage and human rights
  • Establish mechanisms for the recording of measures of social performance
  • Provide documented social performance reports for varying audiences within the Teck corporate structure and external agencies
  • Ensure country personnel have the necessary training and resources to fulfil Teck’s expectations towards Social Responsibility 
  • Negotiate, implements, and maintains agreements & commitments to secure land access as required.   
  • Identify means of continuous improvement in social performance
  • Provides professional develop for project staff in understanding social responsibility and social performance aspects.
  • Engage with the global Exploration Community Relations team and Teck Corporate personnel to help advance the discipline of social responsibility.


About You:
 

  • Tertiary qualification, or equivalent work experience in Social Sciences, Social Responsibility, Sustainability. An advanced degree (e.g. Masters) would be an advantage.
  • Extensive experience in communities-related or social responsibility work and knowledge of relevant approaches, frameworks and methodologies. 
  • Knowledge of grievance resolution and negotiation techniques 
  • Excellent communication and dialogue skills to engage with external stakeholders and influence internal stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of policy and legal frameworks applicable to indigenous and non-indigenous communities where they intersect exploration and mining legislation and regulations (e.g Native Title, Compensation and Conduct Agreements). 
  • Experience in social and sustainability roles specifically within resource companies is considered an asset. 
  • A detailed understanding of social (political and economic) and community issues in Australia and regionally.
