Reporting to the Director, Tax, the Tax Advisor is accountable for contributing to minimizing corporate tax costs by effective tax compliance, including the timely preparation and filing of Canadian corporate tax and information returns, handling of government audits and appeal of tax assessments, management of tax installments and balances, financial reporting relating to taxes, researching tax matters and providing timely informed advice. The Tax Advisor will be assigned a core portfolio of reporting entity files (i.e. operating, holding and minor partnerships and subsidiaries) within the Teck Canadian group. 


Our tax liabilities include corporate income and mining taxes payable of >$100M and corporate tax provisions >$500M.

Responsibilities:

 

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures 
  • Minimize tax compliance costs by completing corporate income, mining tax returns and information returns and elections, accurately and on a timely basis; ensure tax payments and installments are made on a timely basis; evaluating and making recommendations on tax alternatives including discretionary deduction claims and tax incentives to optimize the corporate tax results
  • Contribute to lower tax costs by managing the timing and completeness of the reporting of required financial information by the various earning centres and head office departments to satisfy the accountabilities described in the item above and by being responsive to those centres and departments when informed tax advice is requested
  • Complete quarterly legal entity current and deferred tax provisions and reconciles balance sheet tax accounts, accurately and on a timely basis, contributes to the completion of the year-end consolidated current and deferred tax provisions, accounts and other tax related information for financial reporting
  • Supervise and review the work of a Tax Accountant or other junior staff members as assigned by the Director, Tax when required
  • Identify tax planning opportunities through the ongoing review and research of corporate tax positions and recommending effective courses of action,
  • Lead all aspects of government tax audits, reassessments and objections
  • Develop, maintain, and continuously improve computer models for tax provisions, tax compliance, financial reporting and forecasting purposes
  • Provide effective cash management of tax balances with government authorities, tax refunds, and payments to minimize interest cost
  • Take carriage of one or support certain ancillary tax functional areas for the group (e.g. Exploration affiliates, Sales Tax, SRED, Transfer Pricing, Global Mobility, etc.) as requested
  • Monitor changes in Canadian tax laws, judicial interpretations, government administrative policies and accounting standards and evaluates their impact on corporate tax filings and tax provisions
  • Perform special assignments, which include the compilation, analysis and presentation of findings in a concise manner, as needed
  • Provide limited temporary vacation/leave coverage for another member of the Tax group

Qualifications:

 

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Certified Professional Accountant (CPA) designation is required
  • At least 2+ years (or 2 seasons) of corporate tax compliance and/or provision experience
  • Successful or near completion of CPA Canada In-depth Tax Course
  • Experience with Canadian corporate tax and working with multinational client groups are strong asset
  • Solid understanding and application of IFRS and financial statement tax provision for external reporting
  • Experience with large publicly traded business enterprises is preferred
  • Highly proficient with MS Excel including sophisticated functions
  • Experience with electronic tax research tools and return preparation software
  • Confirmed ability to work independently and contribute to team objectives
  • Self-motivated with critical attention to detail
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Strong organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to balance multiple priorities and meet tight delivery timelines - all within a fast-paced, high-stakes environment

Salary Range: $91,000 - $113,000 

 

 

The actual base salary offered is determined based on the successful candidate’s relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity.
