Senior Project Geophysicist

Duties primarily pertain to the application of geophysics to exploration programs in the North American region toward discovery and enhancing ore body knowledge including managing all aspects from survey planning, through acquisition, data QA/QC, data processing and data interpretation and modelling. Technical contribution to project generation work and the evaluation of third-party properties are also significant components of the role, as is the management of local geophysical resources, including budgets and a variety of contractors and consultants. Working with others in inter-disciplinary teams is a requirement of the role. Teaching and mentoring of other geoscientists interested in geophysics is a critical component of team development. Collaboration with other geophysicists within the region is expected, as well as with other global geophysical staff to support leading practice in geophysical applications. 

The role provides leadership on all aspects of geophysics and delivers timely and practical integrated geophysical solutions. This includes identifying opportunities, building robust geophysical models and communication of results to maximise the use of geophysics to aid in greenfields discovery, resource definition and geoscience solutions in and around Teck’s operations and Advanced projects. 



  • Evaluate the geophysical and related geological aspects of exploration opportunities within North America. In collaboration with project geoscience staff, assist with formulating integrated technical exploration proposals for consideration and, once approved and funded, undertake the planning, supervision and implementation of the geophysical components of exploration programs. 

  • In conjunction with the global geophysical team, develop and refine geophysical and related geological techniques and concepts, programs and approach. Implement, or facilitate implementation of various geophysical surveys to exploration programs within North America, and manage the timing of surveys, and contractors and consultants, in order to maximize performance. 

  • Ensure successful completion of geophysical programs in a cost-efficient manner within the approved budget, consistent with high standards of exploration best practice. 

  • Ensure activities are consistent with Teck’s policies and management systems, as guided by the Charter of Corporate Responsibility, the Code of Sustainable Conduct and the Health and Safety Policy. 

  • In collaboration with project teams, assist with completion of integrated geoscience interpretations of project data leveraging geophysical interpretation techniques (2D/3D, constrained modelling, etc) in order to advance projects to subsequent stages of exploration. Assist with completion of technical reports as required, and ensure all digital geophysical data is stored and accessible according to local data management standards. 

  • Support technical evaluation of external property submittals and acquisition proposals as directed and make concrete recommendations.  

  • Support a high standard of application of geophysical methods at operating mines and sites in North America in collaboration with site-based personnel. 

  • Keep abreast of any new geophysical developments including industry, government and academic research and activities to ensure that the best possible geophysical technologies are applied to Teck’s exploration programs. With the assistance of the Manager, Geophysics, develop, maintain, and apply any specific industry-leading skills (knowledge, software, etc.) for the benefit of Teck’s exploration efforts. 

  • Maintain a regional network of contacts within the industry and government to facilitate evaluation, acquisition and exploration efforts. Participate and contribute to the Teck geophysical group’s regular meetings and interactions as appropriate.  

  • In conjunction with the local project leaders and administration staff, prepare geophysical contracts within North America. Ensure contract deliverables and responsibilities are fulfilled with respect to geophysical agreements. 

  • Proactively communicate with peers, local technical staff and management on a regular basis and report all material geophysical and related exploration results on a timely basis. From time-to-time, provide training to local staff on geophysical subjects and methods as required.  

  • Proactively collaborate with exploration teams to integrate all geoscience data available, at a range of scales, to stretch individual and team skills and knowledge, to drive innovative thinking, develop predictive criteria for deposit location, improve detection methodologies and advance projects toward discovery. 


  • Minimum BSc (Hons) in Geophysics or related discipline and 8-12 years industry experience. Relevant post-graduate studies may also count towards industry experience.  

  • Working knowledge of at least one major ore deposit type (Porphyry Copper, Sedimentary Hosted Zn/Cu, Metallurgical Coal, or Mafic-Ultramafic Intrusion-hosted Ni/Cu) and exploration methods applicable to that type, and/or specific knowledge and experience with a geoscience discipline relevant to Brownfields Geoscience and/or Greenfield Discovery. 

  • Ability to be registered with the EGBC as professional geoscientist 

  • Eligible to work in Canada and the United States
