About our Vancouver Office
Located in the heart of downtown Vancouver, between the Pacific Ocean and the Coast Mountains, Teck’s Corporate Office sits in one of Canada’s most culturally diverse cities.
Surrounded by world-renowned nature and globally inspired cuisine, the office brings together many of Teck’s corporate functions - all working toward Teck’s purpose of providing the essential resources the world relies on.
Role Overview
The Senior Project Geologist – Modelling will work with the Manager – Geoscience Modelling to provide detailed analysis and advanced 3D modelling of multidisciplinary datasets. This supports Teck’s base metal operations and development projects by applying Teck and industry procedures and modelling methods.
Working alongside other technical experts, the incumbent will support coordinated geoscience initiatives and solutions. This ensures the generation of robust geoscience models consistent with appropriate conceptual deposit models and geoscience interpretation. The models will be fit-for-purpose. This includes:
- performing initial data investigation to identify value drivers and controls on the models, and build modeling strategy;
- Generate 3-D models to assist in resource estimation, predict operational and environmental performance, and delineate additional resources. Support the Geoscience Modelling Manager by reviewing and validating existing models for various time frames.
The ideal candidate has experience in production environments, with strong 3D modelling and analytical skills, the ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team, and to collaborate and coordinate efficiently with partners and consultants.
Key Responsibilities
- Be a courageous safety leader, and adhere to and sponsor health, safety, and environmental protocols.
- Perform in-depth exploratory data evaluation and detailed 3D visualization of interdisciplinary datasets to support resource/reserve estimation, resource expansion, geotechnical, geometallurgical, and environmental initiatives.
- Collaborate with Teck geoscience and modelling experts to confirm that all geoscience data used in 3D modelling meets quality standards.
- Ensure that the geology and resource potential of specific projects are well understood through the integration, analysis, and interpretation of geoscientific data and the creation of geological models to inform decision-making.
- Develop 3D geologic and domain models that will inform resource estimation, engineering, geo-metallurgical, geotechnical, hydrogeological, and environmental studies.
- Provide technical support to achieve leading practice in geoscience data acquisition, validation, analysis, and modelling.
- Identify and apply geoscience solutions to increase efficiency and development of project challenges/opportunities.
- As the need arises, in collaboration with the Resources and Reserves team, assist in the preparation of mineral resource block models in accordance with Teck’s standards.
- Collaborate with the wider community of technical specialists across Teck to ensure professional procedures and standards are applied and shared.
- Maintain an understanding of applicable regulatory requirements, including N.I. 43-101, the CIM Standards and Best Practice Guidelines, and the bylaws of the professional association overseeing engineers, as well as geoscience practitioners in British Columbia.
Qualifications
- Registered or eligible for professional registration with the Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia.
- A minimum of a BSc or an equivalent level of experience in Geology; holding a relevant advanced degree (MSc or PhD or comparable experience) improves the candidate's profile.
- Minimum of 10 years of validated experience, preferably in ore-forming systems (such as porphyry, epithermal or skarn systems), including evaluation and geological modelling of large, multi-disciplinary datasets.
- Proficiency in 3D geological modelling software; Leapfrog is helpful.
- Proficiency in other geological databases and data analysis software would be highly regarded (e.g. acQuire, ArcGIS, AutoCAD, ioGas, Python, R, Orange, etc.)
- Exposure to project and mine engineering principles, metallurgical and processing techniques, environmental and material stewardship considerations.
- Experience in the practical application of resource estimation and geostatistics is considered an asset.
- Proactive and motivated team player, willing to learn new skills.
- Proficient in the English language; proficiency in Spanish is an asset.
Pay Range: CAD $122,000 - $150,000 per year
The actual amount offered is determined based on the successful candidate’s relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity.
