Senior Geochemist, Orebody Knowledge

Reporting to the Director, Geoscience Services and based in Vancouver, BC, the Senior Geochemist, Orebody Knowledge is responsible for the advancement of technical excellence in geochemistry in support of Ore Body Knowledge (OBK) at Teck’s Brownfield sites and Advanced Projects including: 1) Performing in-depth analysis of geochemical datasets across the mining spectrum integrating geoscience and mining information to effectively support quality control, resource/reserve estimation, geometallurgy and environmental initiatives; and  2) Delivering specific geochemical support, advice and technical solutions with respect to identification of project risk/opportunity and upside potential.


Responsibilities

 

  • Drive and enable value creation through application of geochemical solutions to OBK challenges and initiatives;
  • Advise and provide technical support and mentorship on best practice geochemical data acquisition (field program design and execution), validation, analysis and modeling for brownfields exploration, Project Development, BU technical groups, and Operations, including regular site visits and interaction with key project stakeholders;
  • Work in close collaboration with Teck’s applied mineralogists and metallurgists to optimize and develop geochemical predictors for mineralogical and metallurgical parameters;
  • Conduct robust geochemical analysis including application of advanced statistical techniques and integration with multidimensional geoscientific data to inform decision making;
  • Provide leadership and support for sampling, analytical method selection and laboratory oversight, and assist with regular audits;
  • Support Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QAQC) programs at Operations and Advanced Projects in Base Metals and Coal as required in collaboration with the Project Geologist, QAQC;
  • Monitor Teck-sponsored OBK geochemical research activities and results to ensure maximum benefit from these investments;
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to increase geochemical competencies within the Teck geoscience community; and
  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental guidelines and procedures.

 

Qualifications & Experience

 

  • MSc or PhD in Geochemistry or a related discipline;
  • A minimum of 10 years of relevant work experience in geochemistry as applied to orebody knowledge;
  • Expert knowledge of analytical techniques and extensive experience dealing with internal and/or external laboratories to ensure excellence in execution;
  • Application of data validation for resource estimation; familiarity with NI 43-101 compliance requirements and QA/QC is critical to the role;
  • Strong knowledge of geochemistry applied to brownfields exploration, advanced projects, Resource Estimation, and Mining Operations;
  • Knowledge of environmental geochemistry including waste rock characterization and metal leaching;
  • Exposure to project and mine engineering principles, metallurgical and processing techniques in addition to environmental and community relations issues;
  • Expert in lithogeochemical characterization of multi-disciplinary data sets from diverse geological and deposit settings using a mathematical approach to solving complex geochemical problems;
  • Experience with advanced data analysis tools and programming languages including R or Python are an asset;
  • Proficient in the use of 3D geological modeling, analysis and visualization software such as Leapfrog; and
  • Strong written and oral English skills are required including advanced writing, presentation and interpersonal and leadership skills. Spanish language skills are an asset.
  • Travel up to 30% to our Advanced Projects in the Americas.
