Senior Engineer, Tailings and Geotechnical

Reporting to the Manager, Tailings and Geotechnical Governance, the Senior Engineer, Tailings & Geotechnical is responsible for supporting Teck’s central tailings and geotechnical team and Teck’s portfolio of projects, operating sites, and legacy sites, with a focus on governance. This role provides key guidance, mentoring and training to Teck’s teams of tailings and geotechnical professionals, supports development and implementation of governance and stewardship programs, and offers technical support to select tailings and geotechnical projects.  The scope includes tailings and water retaining structures, open pits, and mine waste management facilities. This position can be based out of Vancouver, BC, or Santiago, Chile.

Responsibilities

 

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Coordinate, support development, and maintain tailings and geotechnical standards, procedures, and guidance, aligned with corporate commitments and global best practices as appropriate
  • Provide direct support to Qualified Persons/Responsible Tailings Facility Engineers on quality and timing of governance, stewardship and risk oversight of tailings and geotechnical infrastructure 
  • Provide review and support for annual and external reporting, communications with senior leadership, and work by external consultants  
  • Application and consideration of Teck Standards, Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM), International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM), Mining Association of Canada (MAC), and other relevant internal and industry guidelines throughout tailings and geotechnical portfolio 
  • Develop, introduce, and maintain education and awareness systems for tailings and geotechnical requirements and competencies 
  • Coordinate with various Teck teams (e.g. project, site, permitting, environmental, sustainable development, research and development) to integrate tailings and geotechnical systems, guidance, corporate commitments, and best practices into business processes 
  • Develop work scopes and budgets and coordinate, track, and review work by external consultants
  • Assist with ongoing implementation and external reporting of Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM) objectives for all tailings facilities
  • Perform other tasks as required or assigned

Qualifications

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geotechnical, Geological, Civil, Environmental, or Mining Engineering, preferably with specialization in Geotechnical Engineering
  • Master's degree in geotechnical engineering is a strong asset
  • Eligible or registered as a Professional Engineer with the Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia (EGBC)
  • 8 to 10 years relevant and progressive geotechnical experience, including a recent responsibilities for tailings and water retaining structures or geotechnical infrastructure. Experience in an operating mining environment is advantageous  
  • Experience in design, monitoring, performance analysis, reporting, and stewardship of tailings and/or water dams, open pits, and/or mine waste management facilities with a proven track record of extensive practical experience
  • Excellent understanding of the GISTM and tailings and geotechnical industry guidance (e.g. CDA Dam Safety Guidelines, MAC Tailings Management Protocol) as well as a broad knowledge of mining policy and standard process topics
  • A results-oriented individual who has exceptional organizational, research, planning, writing and communication skills
  • Keen to take initiative, act proactively to anticipate needs, and work independently and in a team environment. Ability to prioritize and manage time effectively
  • A valid driver’s licence and willingness to travel  
  • Strong English written and verbal  communication skills in both formal and informal settings
  • Ability to speak Spanish is an asset

Salary Range: CAD $119,340 - $147,420  

  

The actual base salary offered is determined based on the successful candidate’s relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity.
