Project Controls Specialist, RACE21

Reporting to the Program Manager-Innovation and Technology and as a member of the Project Management Office, the Project Controls Specialist will support the application of project controls practices including the disciplines of cost controls and change management.  Included also are integration activities with estimating and scheduling functions.

 

RACE21 is Teck’s innovation-driven efficiency program, that looks across the full value chain from mine to port. The program leverages existing, proven technology to improve productivity and lower costs with a focus on delivering significant value by 2021.

 

Responsibilities:

 

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Prepare and execute the project cost management plans in a manner that provides accurate and timely control of project costs, and accurate information for reporting, options analysis, business case review and project execution planning.
  • Support the set-up and implementation of the Project Controls management systems, processes and workflows, and staffing of the team.
  • Assist with preparation of the overall Project Control Plan.
  • Assist with validating contractor’s monthly progress payment certificates and invoices.
  • Support the development of the project budget by aligning the project estimate and procurement packaging plan, and present the project baseline budget for approval.
  • Perform the required cost control transactions and functions.
  • Support the analysis of project cost impact and delays, and review of periodic project cost updates.
  • Prepare, or support the preparation of the Teck different periodic reports.
  • Arrange and facilitate the weekly Project Cost and Schedule review meetings.
  • Prepare cost status reports, cost trending, and cost analysis.
  • Provide timely variance analysis and an early warning to management on cost variances to the approved baseline/forecast. Provide corrective action plans as required.
  • Perform change management functions and maintain change management records of scope changes, trends, and variances.
  • Continually review and ensure the integrity and credibility of the information contained in the cost reports.
  • Assist with integration of scheduling and planning activities with the project teams, external consultants and internal groups, to develop and update detailed schedules.  
  • Assist with integration of progress and performance activities.
  • At the completion of the project, assist with the development and recording of the project’s historical cost information and “lessons learned”, for use on future projects.

 

Qualifications:

 

  • 7-10 years’ experience in Project Control Roles is required
  • Experience in Project Control roles on Program and/or Portfolio of digital technology projects is preferred
  • Good skills in the area of budgeting, cost control, and cost system application, planning, progress measurement.
  • Understanding of project management.
  • Good knowledge of overall project implementation management processes.
  • Good software skills on Excel is required, skills on Prism and Primavera are preferred.
  • Good with data and attention to detail.
  • Good communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem solving abilities
