Program Manager, Open & Autonomous Haulage - RACE21

Job Summary/General Accountability:

Mining autonomy is a central element of Teck’s transformational RACE program and is actively deploying or testing autonomous haul trucks and drills:  https://www.teck.com/technology/ 

Reporting to Teck’s Manager of Autonomy, the Program Manager, Open & Advanced Automation is accountable for all aspect of Teck’s advanced automation strategy with a key focus on enabling advanced and interoperable automation technology development through site level proof of concepts, pilots, and testing activities.  This includes establishing and managing Teck’s existing external relationships with mining, automation, and equipment manufacturing companies.  As initiatives transition to execution phases, this position will establish and lead teams comprised of varying technical, operating, and internal/third party backgrounds responsible for regulatory approval, communications, planning, construction, commissioning, and field testing and associated development. 

This role is an exciting and unique opportunity to make a meaningful impact to the mining automation landscape and help accelerate the transition of public sector advanced automation grounded in machine learning and artificial intelligence into the mining sector.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor Teck’s commitment to health, safety, environmental and community (HSEC) protection as a core value.  
  • Defining and syndicating Teck’s open and advanced automation strategic roadmap and program aimed at delivering the aims of that strategy
  • Maturing key strategic initiatives through the life cycle of scoping, pre-feasibility, feasibility, definition, and execution
  • Representing Teck’s automation interest at various industry consortia’s, working groups, conferences, etc.
  • Establishing and managing multidisciplinary “project teams” comprised of Teck and various third-party entities responsible for safe and successful execution.
  • Integrating with other Teck strategic initiatives including decarbonization, integrated operations, and advanced analytics products
  • Acting as an internal subject matter expert for the RACE21TM team, including both formal mechanisms (“101s”, “Lunch and Learns”, “Team Learning Sessions”) and informal coaching

 

Key Competencies:

The successful candidate’s core competency will be a proven ability to coordinate the work of diverse teams composed of internal and external individuals with disparate competencies such as the deployment and optimization of autonomous haulage, autonomy software development, systems integration, and commercial relationship management.  Teck recognizes this is a unique role and is open to applicants with a variety of backgrounds including those from outside the mining industry. The successful candidate will have experience in one or more of:

  • 10+ years' experience in mining, and/or automation sector
  • Minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in Mining, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, with Professional Engineer Designation (P.Eng)
  • Domain expertise in autonomous haulage 
  • Operational surface mining experience 
  • Autonomy software development, functional safety, and control systems experience

 

Other relevant, non-technical competencies include

  • Strong leadership skills with a proved track record of leading technical and operations teams that deliver results
  • Very effective interpersonal skills including mentoring, coaching, collaborating, networking, providing and receiving feedback and team building and experience interacting with individuals from both technology organizations and operational sites, at all levels of an organization
  • Excellent interpersonal skills as well as excellent oral and written communication skills  
  • Change Agent: experience and understanding of effective change management
  • Adaptable: comfortable with working in ambiguous and unstructured settings
  • Problem Solving: able to organize complex problems, frame analysis, and arrive at conclusions quickly 
  • Self-Driven: able to independently deliver work products to timelines
  • Influencer: able to work effectively and build relationships with people from across stakeholders, departments, etc.
  • Bias for action: seeks to move from analysis to action as quickly as possible
  • Solid understanding of mining industry fundamentals
  • Operational experience with mining autonomy would be considered an asset
  • Project Management Professional designation would be considered an asset
