Our Principal Geologist is an experienced geoscientist who will help lead project generation for greenfield ore discoveries across a range of jurisdictions, scales, and commodities. You will lead initiatives to identify, assess, and recommend high-quality greenfield discovery opportunities to build groundbreaking value for Teck and its partners. While initial focus will be on copper and zinc in Europe, the scope of work will extend to include southern Africa and to provide contributions to the global Strategy and New Projects (S&NP) team and Global Discovery Community of Practice (CoP).


The Principal Geologist is a multifaceted, experienced exploration professional with strong multi-disciplinary technical skills in ore deposit geology and mineral systems, coupled with a highly creative and innovative approach to greenfield project generation, exploration targeting and opportunity identification and capture. Confirmed leadership skills, a track record of discovery, and the ability to collaborate across the exploration group are imperative. Development and mentorship of earlier career geoscience professionals is also a critical component of the role.


The successful candidate will work with existing jurisdictional teams and project generation staff across Exploration & Geoscience (E&G). Depending on location and priorities, the role will report to either the Regional Chief Geoscientist or Director, Global Project Generation.


****Location of this role is open to the best-suited candidate in one of our global offices (Canada, Ireland, Turkey, Australia, Chile or Peru) with the work initially focused on Generative priorities in Europe.



  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures.
  • Lead greenfield project generation efforts in Europe and Africa, spanning development of regional exploration strategies and tactics, regional area selection and targeting; opportunity identification, due diligence, and capture; project rating and prioritization; and recommending cost efficient mineral exploration programs for discovery.
  • Collaborate closely with the Exploration management team to identify new discovery opportunities and make recommendations for the capture of new projects founded by solid technical and non-technical (ESG) risk assessments.
  • Work closely with global commercial and evaluations personnel to prioritize opportunities for project capture.
  • Contribute to development and implementation of mineral system models, regional targeting frameworks, and innovative discovery leading practices.
  • Provide mentorship and training to regional exploration teams toward their employee development and career planning.
  • Share subject area expertise and practices with the Teck global discovery community and promote idea exchange across E&G sites, offices and domains.
  • Promote the company’s dedication to health and safety, sustainability, the environment, and ensure Teck’s standards are met in the region.
  • Stay abreast of the latest developments in academic research and government geoscience initiatives related to mineral exploration.
  • As required, represent Teck at research institutions and projects and ensure accurate knowledge transfer and implementation of key results within projects.
  • Maintain a broad network of regional industry contacts for technical and commercial intelligence and promote Teck being a partner of choice to surface and capture new opportunities as they arise.
  • Build a culture of collaboration across all constituents and partners and encourage partnership and open communication.



  • Minimum of 15 years of geoscience experience, including substantial focus on greenfield project generation, regional targeting, and exploration.
  • University degree in geoscience or a related field is required. A relevant, advanced degree (MSc or PhD) will be considered a strong asset.
  • Demonstrated track record of discovery in base metal and/or gold systems will be considered a key asset.
  • Extensive experience working on porphyry copper systems and a solid understanding of economic geology and base-metal mineral systems is required.
  • Experience in sediment-hosted copper and zinc, magmatic nickel-copper ore and poly-metallic epithermal systems will be a strong asset.
  • Solid understanding of European and African geology and exploration environments will be an asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively at a variety of scales (continent, district, and deposit).
  • Demonstrated experience of effectively leading, running and influencing people and teams to achieve business objectives.
  • Results oriented with excellent organizational, planning, management, and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent communication, facilitation and interpersonal skills and experience working with a broad range of people across diverse locations and cultures.
  • Proficient spoken and written English language skills are required.
  • Eligibility to work in the local jurisdiction of the posting is required.
  • Enrollment as a Professional Geoscientist with EGBC is required for candidates based in British Columbia.
