Mining Business Improvement Co-op

Minimum Qualifications: Must currently be enrolled in a recognized and accredited Canadian post-secondary institution throughout the duration of the co-op term. You must also be returning to a post-secondary institution after the co-op term is completed. Depending on the needs and location of the team, you will need to work PST or MDT or relocate to a specific office (Vancouver or site-based) 

Desired Background: Reporting to Teck’s Manger, Strategy & Optimization, the Business Improvement Co-op is a frontline change agent for BI Autonomy Team’s clients. Primarily responsible for the execution of Teck’s BI Autonomy improvement initiatives to achieve clearly demonstrable and sustainable business value across all our operations. The successful candidate will have the chance to cooperate with senior leaders across the company, and work with OEMs, experts in our corporate and operations groups. Experience in this role will set you up for success for future opportunities within the company. Success will require a blend of analytical and interpersonal skills. We are specifically looking for an individual with outstanding analytical skills to tackle large and ambiguous business problems, and superb interpersonal skills to lead cross-functional teams to develop novel solutions. Responsibilities

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures.  
  • Be the primary source of reliable data and rock-solid analysis, providing the fact base the Teck’s BI Autonomy team uses to make decisions in real time.  
  • Provide rigor and accuracy to the improvement effort. As the chief source of insight based on the data, facilitate the prioritization of improvement opportunities, and use root cause analysis to help resolve day-to-day issues with implementation.  
  • Build performance tracking dashboards using tools like Excel and PowerBI  
  • Develop implementation plans for portfolio of initiatives that have clear arguments and consensus from key stakeholders, aligned with Teck Autonomy’s strategic pipeline.  
  • Track the performance of your improvement initiatives via key metrics such as Key Performance Indicators impact, end user adoption, schedule & cost. 
  • Collaborate with teams to proactively identify risks, issues and/or opportunities to ensure the maximum business value delivered.  
  • Collaborate with site counterparts, sharing your skills and building relationships across Teck’s operations, using your network to ensure improvement plans are firmly based on the real-world your clients operate in.  

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree or equivalent experience in mining engineering (strong preference), geological, mechanical or civil engineering, 
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills 
  • Comfortable with Senior leader engagement  
  • Solid understanding of mining industry fundamentals  
  • Experience in the deployment of Continuous Improvement Programs within mining industry would be considered an asset.  
  • Ability to communicate effectively with precision in a technical environment.  
  • Able to articulate complex concepts clearly and in a way a diverse audience would understand.  
  • Able to work effectively independently as well as part of the team.  
  • Proven ability to learn innovative technologies and platforms quickly, accurately, and efficiently.  
  • Comfortable with working in ambiguous and unstructured settings  
  • Interest in providing digital solutions in the mining industry is an asset.  
  • Anticipated travel requirement is up to 40%.  
  • Fluency in Spanish is considered an asset.  
  • Communication: excellent at articulating points, and effectively delivering a message  
  • Change Agent: experience and understanding of effective change management  
  • Able to build relationships easily and comfortable with approaching others  
  • Adaptable: comfortable with working in ambiguous and unstructured settings

Wage Range: $3,900 - $4,800 / Month

 

Salary is commensurate with the number of academic semesters and prior co-op experiences completed.
