Manager of Data Science - RACE21

Reporting to the RACE21™ Director of Digital, the Manager of Data Science will be responsible for leading a geographically distributed (Vancouver, Santiago and Sparwood) and rapidly growing team of data scientists, data engineers and data analysts within the digital organization.

You will work closely with the Manager of Product, Manager of Software Development, Value Delivery team as well as external partners and suppliers in order to successfully deliver advanced analytics products and projects across the RACE21™ portfolio spanning mining, processing, maintenance and integrated operations business domains.


  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • You are a highly effective, customer-obsessed and data-driven advanced analytics leader who will keep the team focused and motivated to deliver on time
  • You are passionate about product innovation and creating a step change leveraging the power of cloud, big data and advanced analytics
  • You have experience working on data-intensive projects, using modern data platforms and tools and advanced analytics methods and approaches
  • You are comfortable working with minimal direction and exercising considerable latitude in determining objectives and leading teams


  • Lead, mentor and grow a team of data scientists, data engineers and data analysts
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders across value delivery, product, engineering and operations to help your team succeed
  • Actively participate in planning, resourcing and execution of advanced analytics products and projects across a variety of business domains
  • Establish and continuously improve a repeatable and scalable process for delivering advanced analytics solutions and data products in collaboration with other technology and business leaders
  • Provide ongoing stewardship and oversight required to establish consistency of approaches and a unified technical strategy across multiple teams delivering advanced analytics solutions
  • Actively support hiring and team development plans for you respective disciplines
  • Establish and maintain relationship with external partners and provide technical oversight of suppliers augmenting internal teams with advanced analytics capabilities
  • Lead outreach activities into data science communities (e.g. hackathons, meetups, conferences) and academic institutions collaborating with the Director of Digital and HR
  • A university degree or diploma in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics or similar disciplines
  • 3+ years manager or team leader experience with people management skills
  • Significant experience in machine learning, statistics or a closely related discipline, and applying these techniques to solve real business problems
  • Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills, combined with the ability to present your ideas clearly and compellingly to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Ability to think strategically while staying on top of tactical execution
  • Track record of guiding teams through unstructured problems to deliver business impact
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and passion for coaching and mentoring teams
  • Experience working with engineering and product teams to build scalable products powered by advanced analytics
  • In-depth understanding of at least one agile development methodology and hands-on expertise integrating advanced analytics teams in cross-functional delivery teams
  • Experience with Google Cloud Platform (GCP) big data and machine learning services is an asset
  • Experience in leading geographically distributed advanced analytics teams is an asset
  • Experience working in mining industry is an asset
  • A valid driver's licence might be required
  • Willingness to travel up to 20% of the time
