Reporting to the Head, Government & Regulatory Affairs, the Manager, Government & Regulatory Affairs is responsible for leading and providing strategic government relations support and advocacy. While the focus of this role is North American jurisdictions, this position also manages our trade and commercial government affairs activities in jurisdictions where the company is active.

 

The successful candidate will have outstanding skills in the principles and practices of government relations, regulatory affairs and communications – including analysis, policy development, planning, strategy formulation, content development and issues management. This role interacts extensively with internal management and teams across Teck’s operations in a consultative, advisory, and directive capacity.

 

This position is based in Vancouver with travel to operations, events and government meetings, as appropriate and required.

Responsibilities

 

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures

  • Provides leadership to the Government Affairs and Senior Management team to develop and implement government relations strategies.

  • Conducts government affairs monitoring and analysis, including developments related to political, legislative and regulatory events, and provides ongoing thought leadership to guide the planning and priorities for government affairs planning.

  • Supports compliance activities related to all applicable rules and regulations in relation to government engagement.

  • Develop, lead, and maintain key personnel’s relationships with provincial, state, federal, and international government agencies at all levels.

  • Supports Teck and the leadership team to ensure governance around lobbyist registrations and ESG reporting is completed in a timely fashion.

  • Provides leadership and works with subject matter experts to develop public policy positions for both broad public policy issues (e.g. Critical minerals policy) and for more immediate, multifaceted issues that directly impact the business (e.g. Taxation and tariff questions)

  • Leads teams across Teck related to government funding opportunities, including researching and drafting applications for funding that advance Teck’s business objectives.

  • Liaises with enterprise functions and operations across the company to identify and support interests related to government activities, including leading engagement with BUs as immediate and/or crises arise, e.g. Urgent requests to acquire outstanding permits and responding to labour disputes.

  • Represent our position in various member associations, task forces, and working groups.

  • Plans and conducts government relations meetings and events.

  • Tracks and provides support for industry and business association activities and coordinates Teck's contributions to policy consultations.

  • Finds opportunities for further engagement with governments and conferences, and willingness to travel to represent Teck as the need arises.

  • Ensure key messages are delivered consistently and effectively to governments and other relationships through presentations, briefing documents, and other communications materials.

Qualifications

 

  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in the field of government, government relations or a related field. Experience leading or supervising a team.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science, Public Administration, Business or Communications. Master’s degree in these areas or a Law degree is strongly preferred.

  • Excellent understanding of political, legislative and regulatory processes in Canada, the United States and other international jurisdictions.

  • Excellent research, writing and communications skills.

  • Strong analytical capabilities and close attention to detail.

  • Ensures quality control for their own product.

  • Outstanding organizational skills and strong ability to multitask.

  • Keen to take initiative and act proactively to anticipate needs.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and cultivate positive relationships with internal and external partners.

  • Direct experience working for elected officials and/or in a government role.

  • Strong demonstrable digital literacy, in particular with MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

  • Proficiency in Spanish, French, and/or Mandarin is an asset.

Salary Range: $135,000 - $167,000 

 

 

The actual base salary offered is determined based on the successful candidate’s relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity.
