Reporting to the Regional Director of Environment for the North America region, the Manager, Environmental Sciences is responsible for advancing our technical understanding of environmental challenges/opportunities and developing strategic plans that minimize risk across our assets. In doing so, this involves meeting compliance requirements, commitments with Indigenous Government Organizations, and performance targets.
The position requires outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, the ability to present material, and to use sound regulatory and technical justification to influence outcomes. This outstanding individual will require ability to prioritize contending demands in a fast paced, dynamic environment. They will further possess prioritization and problem-solving abilities with a passion for continuous improvement. This position will also require close collaboration with multi-disciplinary teams across the organization with a focus on Operations, Projects and Legacy Properties. The incumbent will provide outstanding leadership, scientific knowledge, a robust technical understanding of environmental fields, and practical experience in environmental mining areas. Responsibilities:
- Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
- Foster a team culture of inclusivity and collaboration through mentorship, empowerment, and engagement
- Build and maintain effective relationships across the following: the North American portfolio and enterprise teams, government representatives, regulators, Indigenous communities, communities of interest, and environmental organizations
- Advise on management decisions and regulatory approvals related to environmental fields. In doing so, apply robust technical expertise and sound knowledge of applicable commitments, permits, and associated requirements
- Identify key risks, issues, and opportunities related to advancement of Teck’s business strategy. This includes the strategic direction for compliance and regulatory approvals associated with operations, projects, and legacy properties
- Provide oversight into environmental-related challenges and opportunities including, but not limited, water quality, toxicology, fisheries, air quality, spill and waste management, etc
- Develop strategies for environmental management across assets
- Lead and support negotiations with government, regulatory agencies, Indigenous government organizations, and lease holders on conditions, commitments, agreements, and mitigation actions
- Provide leadership and technical expertise in the development and maintenance of robust monitoring programs that meet business needs, regulatory requirements and commitments
- Review and and provide techncial direction on fulfilling reporting requirements internally and externally
- Ensure annual budgeting and scheduling meet business commitments
- Coach and guide team members, fostering their professional development and ensuring the team is successful delivering environmental objectives
- Support required training and capacity building with Operations as required to effectively apply relevant guidelines, procedures, and standards
- Remain current on environmental issues that have the potential to impact Teck’s reputation and sustainability
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in an environmental-related field; professional designation (e.g., R.P.Bio.) preferred
- 10+ years of experience providing leadership in environmental sciences, compliance, and risk management in mining or natural resources
- Well-versed in provincial and federal legislation and regulatory requirements applicable to mining activities
- Advanced written, verbal and interpersonal communications and presentation skills in both formal and informal settings. The capability to build and maintain relationships with government officials, Indigenous groups, and communities
- Technical understanding of: environmental sciences, risk evaluation, compliance practices related to water quality/quantity, toxicology, fisheries, air quality, mine waste management, ecological or human health risk assessments, noise, or biodiversity
- Demonstrated ability to work well with and build relationships with people at all levels of the organization to influence outcomes and handle conflict
- Strong leadership and management skills including the capacity to handle a technically-diverse staff and consultants. The capability to effectively leverage abilities and provide additional support where necessary
- A strategic approach to solving problems with logical and appropriate solutions in a timely and decisive manner
- Motivated self-starter who can lead several projects simultaneously and adapt to changing situations
- Ability to travel approximately 30% on average annually
- High degree of critical thinking and analytical skills with strong technical writing skills
- Show curiosity through asking well formulated questions and by taking personal risk to raise points of creative tension
- Deliver with a “fit-for-purpose” approach focusing on the key levers or inputs that have a material impact on positive outcomes and results

Salary Range: $147,000 - $182,000
The actual base salary offered is determined based on the successful candidate’s relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity.
