Leader, Social Responsibility

Reporting to the Manager, Social Management and Responsibility, the Leader, Social Responsibility is responsible for leading the development and delivery of programs to support Teck in improving its social performance. 

The Leader will work closely with operations, projects, exploration and other internal groups. This position is based in Vancouver with some travel to sites.  


  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • As a subject-matter expert, provide on-going guidance, support and capacity building to the social management/communities function at sites
  • Work across  business units and functional groups to collectively improve the social performance of the company, including program development, implementation, monitoring, and reporting.
  • Support the ongoing development, training and implementation of Teck’s social management framework.across the mining lifecycle. Lead monitoring, evaluation, and upgrades of the framework and support practitioners in adoption and implementation of these practices.
  • Help facilitate and manage the development of systems, processes and capacity-development in support of social risk management, impact management, community development and community engagement
  • Work across functions and business units to achieve compliance with Teck’s HSEC Management Standards and support the achievement of Teck’s Sustainability Strategy.
  • Contribute to the reporting and communication of Teck’s social performance by preparing reports, data, and case studies on activities for external reports (such as Teck’s Sustainability Report, the Dow Jones Sustainability Index, and Teck’s Annual Report.)
  • Represent Teck at external meetings as a subject-matter expert on social management and responsibility activities.
  • Support the Manager, Social Management and Responsibility, with strategic planning, decision-making processes and program development at Teck.


  • 7-10 years of relevant professional work experience desired, but not essential
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant discipline desired, but not essential. Post-graduate degree (e.g. Masters or equivalent diploma) is an asset.
  • Excellent communication, relationship-building and interpersonal skills and experience working with a broad range of people and groups. Training skills and experience are an advantage.
  • Proficiency in one or more of the following skillsets: capacity development, adult training or education, group facilitation and collaboration, systems thinking, project design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation.
  • Technical knowledge/experience in corporate social responsibility specifically in mining or extractives, is desired but not essential
  • Knowledge and experience of international principles and best practice related to communities and social responsibility is desired but not essential e.g. International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM), London Benchmarking, Imagine Canada, IFC Performance Standards, UN Sustainable Development Goals and the Global Reporting Initiative.
  • Integrity, respect and solutions-focused with a commitment to participatory community and sustainable development.
  • Results-oriented with excellent organizational, planning and decision making skills.
  • Self starter who is committed to learning and evolving their practice within the company
  • Track record influencing colleagues and practice.
  • Language skills, especially Spanish, are desirable.
  • Ability for travel domestically and internationally (30%) required
