Global Corporate Counsel, Environment and Regulatory

Reporting to the Vice President, Legal and Corporate Secretary, the Global Corporate Counsel, Environment and Regulatory, is responsible for advising and guiding the company on environment and regulatory compliance matters globally. This role partners and collaborates with operations and other departments to provide strategic legal counsel, enabling compliance with applicable laws and regulations across Teck’s global footprint. This role will work with a global team, including other members of the legal department, functional groups and operations, and external advisors, to provide strategic legal advice, support the company’s legal and compliance needs across diverse regulatory and political environments and mitigate reputational and enforcement risks for current operations and projects.
The successful candidate will be a lawyer in good standing with the Law Society of British Columbia (or eligible) with between 10-12 years of experience in environmental and regulatory law.
Responsibilities
- Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
- Provide strategic legal advice on global environmental and health and safety compliance and investigation matters and strategy in concert with other lawyers and compliance professionals for a consistent approach and procedures across Teck operations and projects
- Identify, evaluate and mitigate environmental risks globally and develop, implement and oversee the company’s global environmental and health and safety compliance policies, practices, and strategy, with a focus on consistent performance and measurement across sites, enabling operational efficiency, compliance, and permitting
- shape environmental and health and safety policies and strategic decision-making regarding environmental and health and safety compliance and investigation matters by partnering with operations and sustainability leadership teams
- Partner with cross-functional teams to complete compliance initiatives or create processes to assess and mitigate overall legal and regulatory risks in environmental and health and safety compliance and investigation matters
- Provide strategic legal advice and assess risks related to in communications related to environmental and health and safety compliance and investigation matters
- Become thoroughly acquainted with Teck’s environmentally complex mining and processing operations and legacy sites globally, including in Canada, United States and Chile
- Provide timely advice and guidance to operations and projects in relation to environmental incidents and ensuing inspections, investigations and enforcement action
- Develop and implement effective tools, processes, and training materials and provide training to operations and functional group staff with respect to compliance matters, incident response and investigations
- Provide counsel and support in relation to environmental and health and safety issues and due diligence associated with reorganizations and mergers & acquisitions
- Review, revise and draft documents including communications with regulators, corporate policies, standards, procedures and guidelines, and internal and external communications related to environmental and health and safety compliance and investigation matters
- Monitor changes in relevant legislation and advise with respect to necessary compliance actions and policy updates, and assist with change management
- Assist with environmental and health and safety matters related to mergers and acquisitions, divestitures and joint ventures and provide legal advice with respect to same

- Lead, coach, mentor and develop a global team, with global legal personnel with responsibility for environmental compliance matters in jurisdictions in which Teck operates having a dotting line reporting relationship into this role
- Partner and collaborate with operations and other departments to provide legal support, guidance and training
- Develop, advise on and implement legal strategies to support business objectives and compliance with applicable law, regulatory guidelines, and other mandatory and voluntary compliance obligations applicable to environment and health and safety matters
- Manage relationships with external counsel who advise on environment and health and safety matters
Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (JD)/Bachelor of Laws Degree (LL.B.) degree or equivalent legal qualification
- Minimum 12 years of applicable experience, preferably as a legal practitioner in environmental, health and safety, and regulatory law with exposure to complex industrial operations and compliance and enforcement matters
- Experience advising multinational corporations on regulatory compliance and strategy
- Member of the Law Society of British Columbia or eligible to be called
- Outstanding verbal and written communication skills, as well as excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with a varied audience, with ability to build trust and develop positive relationships
- Strong legal technical and drafting skills

Salary Range:$176000.0 - $217000.0
The actual base salary offered is determined based on the successful candidate’s relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity.
