Environmental and GIS Co-op

For this exciting position, we are specifically targeting students who have a background in Environmental Sciences, Environmental Engineering, or related fields. If you are not currently located in the area of this co-op position, you must be willing to either commute or relocate to the surrounding area for the entire duration of the co-op term. You must also currently be a student enrolled in a Canadian post-secondary institution and will be enrolled throughout the duration of the co-op term (you will also be returning back to the post-secondary institution once the co-op term is completed). Proof of a valid work permit will also be required, if applicable.

Highland Valley Copper (HVC) Operations is Canada’s largest open-pit copper mine and molybdenum operation. HVC produces both copper and molybdenum concentrate through autogenous and semi-autogenous grinding and flotation. Once processed, the metal concentrates are exported overseas, where the majority is sold under long-term sales contracts to smelters.
Located approximately 17 kilometers west of Logan Lake and about 50 kilometers southwest of Kamloops in British Columbia, the surrounding areas of HVC have an abundant offering of outdoor experiences. From golfing in the spring, to camping in the summer, and skiing in the winter, Logan Lake provides excellent access to the wilderness that makes it great place to start your adventure!

Salary Range: $4100 - $5300 / Month
Salary is commensurate with the number of academic semesters and prior co-op experiences completed.
Responsibilites:
- Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
- Assist with GIS mapping and work planning for numerous scopes of work
- Support the development and implementation of environmental monitoring programs
- Help prepare and update environmental records, reports and presentations
- Participate in environmental toolbox meetings and give to discussions on improvements
- Assist in the investigation of environmental incidents and near-misses
- Collaborate with the existing mine environmental team to promote sustainable practices throughout the mining and construction operations
- Assist with the development and distribution of environmental communications and bulletins
- Supervise compliance with environmental regulations and company policies, participating in updates of environmental impact mitigation strategies
- Provide support during environmental emergency drills and exercises
- Assist in the development and review of waste management and recycling programs
- Support the implementation of water and air quality monitoring systems
- Help coordinate with mine operations environmental group
- Assist in the management of environmental equipment and supplies
- Manage regular inspections of construction sites to ensure environmental compliance
Qualifications:
- Currently enrolled in a college or university program, preferably in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Occupational Health and Safety, or a related field
- Medium to high level skills with ESRI Arc GIS
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Basic knowledge of environmental regulations and standard processes is a plus
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- A valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle for the duration of the co-op is required
All students will be required to complete a pre-employment drug testing prior to commencing work.
Preferred Certifications:
- First Aid and CPR Certification
- WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System) Certification
