Role Overview
Reporting functionally to the Director of Engineering and operationally to the Project Director, the Engineering Manager’s key accountability is to build value and address and mitigate the risks associated with the engineering work scopes performed on the project by the owner’s team and Engineering Services providers. This includes scope development for engineering and construction contracts; proposal or bid evaluation and consultant selection; oversight of engineering consultants and Teck engineering staff; engineering change management, and quality and risk management.
A critical success factor is ensuring positive interactions and collaboration with other groups: procurement, construction management, project controls, permitting and community relations and close liaison with project managers, project services staff within the Projects Group and other Teck departments such as Health and Safety, Risk, Legal, technical services, operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
- Lead the Teck engineering team assigned to the project
- Provide quality assurance across engineering service providers’ deliverables and activities including execution plans, HAZOPs, risk registers, quality management systems and technical reports
- Contribute towards management and sponsorship of relationships with technical services providers, specialist contractors and consultants, coordinating scopes between multiple consultants
- Develop resource plans ensuring project staffing requirements are efficiently and effectively met
- Ensure that social, environmental and regulatory processes are effectively supported by the owner and contractor engineering teams
- Develop the Scope of Work (SOW) for the Engineering Work Packages (EWP) and review Engineering Service Providers procedures, specifications and deliverables lists
- Lead value engineering and management of change process for engineering scope during all project phases from design through construction including Field Change Request and Request for Information processes
- Progress the Engineering Safety and Sustainability through Design initiative on the project and champion strategies which promote sustainability, inclusion and diversity and measurably reduce hazards to people and the environment
- Interpret technical requirements of the design documents to provide clear understanding and accurate implementation of requirements
- Support pre-commissioning and turnover requirements preparing required test and acceptance procedures
- Develop a review process for technical documents and ensure compliance with the process in a timely manner
- Lead weekly project technical meetings and attend project leadership team meetings
- Review consultant monthly reports, identify risks and opportunities and address areas of concern
- Monitor the consultants deliverables progress and identify, report and manage budget and schedule trends
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in an Engineering discipline or equivalent
- Registration or eligibility to register as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) in the appropriate jurisdiction as required
- Minimum 15 years meaningful experience in engineering management roles on major infrastructure, mining and/or process plant projects
- Previous project design and site engineering experience
- Project experience as an owner at a major mining company is preferred or, as a minimum, experience as owner's team representative or EPCM contractor for the resource industry
- Training and experience in project management systems and an understanding of multiple phases of project execution
- Able to prioritize activities and outcomes to support the achievement of project key performance indicators
- Strong critical and conceptual thinking skills and knowledge of overall project implementation management processes
- Sound business sense and ability to prioritize project value drivers
- Developed depth and breadth of expertise across relevant technical scope areas
- Proficient with project controls, scope management, risk and quality management
- Able to coordinate work efforts of technical team, including multiple consultants
- Effectively plans work in areas of responsibility
- Experience crafting and delivering technical presentations to diverse audiences and confirmed capabilities in writing accurate, detailed and persuasive reports
- Results-oriented with excellent organizational, planning and decision-making skills
- Budgeting and resource management and planning experience
Pay Range: CAD $160,000 - $198,000 per year
The actual amount offered is determined based on the successful candidate’s relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity.
