Director of Studies

The Director, Studies is accountable for leading and directing Teck’s early stage studies through prefeasibility, working in collaboration with, and on behalf of, Teck’s business units to shape our large projects to inform sound commercial decisions within Teck.  Teck’s large project portfolio includes both Brownfield and Greenfield projects ranging in capital.  The Director, Studies provides leadership in shaping, optimizing and unlocking the value that Teck’s project portfolio offers.  Reporting to the Vice President of Project Development, the role includes significant interaction and collaboration with Teck’s executive leadership team.   Essential skills include strategic thinking, business acumen, complex decision making, innovation, and strong representation supporting the positioning of Teck as a partner of choice. 


The position will be based in Vancouver, British Columbia

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Responsible for the overall delivery of Teck's early stage studies through prefeasibility within scope, budget and schedule aligned to the business case and Teck’s values of safety and sustainability. 
  • Promote and embed the culture of Teck’s Courageous Safety Leadership program within all study activities.
  • Provide regular updates to the VP and Business Owners as well as regular reporting and strategic advice to Study Boards and Steering Committees, Teck senior management and occasionally to the Teck Board of Directors.
  • Lead the Study Managers and Social, Environmental, and Regulatory Approval (SERA) Managers, providing overall alignment, coordination and guidance.
  • Support and provide leadership with the Project Development Group's (PDGs) 5 Year Plan in alignment with the PDG's Guiding Principles
  • Develop and maintain open and effective communications within study team, with internal Teck departments and with external stakeholders.
  • Coordinate and manage the work effort of multiple study service providers.
  • Ensure that the social, environmental, regulatory processes are effectively managed. Ensure that all governmental and regulatory approvals required to be attained are identified, defined and adequately resourced in order to achieve timely completion of approval documentation and data collection.
  • Identify relevant communities of interest and ensure plans and strategies are developed and implemented to achieve community support, regulatory approvals and compliance.
  • Provide leadership and champion a culture of continuous improvement, innovation and value creation. Develop a "learning organization" ensuring "lessons learned" and "better ways" are captured and implemented on the Study as well as documenting them for other Teck Studies.
  • Provide direction to identify strengths, critical issues and areas of risks/exposure in the execution of Studies. Ensure that risks to Teck and the Project are identified and mitigated based on best practices in risk management.
  • Support the development of key project team members through mentoring and coaching.
  • Review Study and SERA manager performance across all Project Development Group projects and identify strengths, critical issues and areas of risks/exposure that require action.
  • Provide guidance, direction and training in the development of Study and SERA management principles; integration of the business objectives for studies; development of study and SERA management standards and procedures as well as such standards and procedures continue to reflect good and appropriate practices for effective project delivery. 
  • Work with the Teck Project Development Framework (TPDF) Champions to ensure that stage gating and independent peer review processes are fully integrated to deliver the most benefit to the Study Owners and Executive Management.


IDEAL EXPERIENCE 

 

Industry Experience

  • Ideal candidate to have more than 20 years’ experience in the early study phases for mining specific projects.  Experience within the Copper and/or Coal industry is a strong preference but not absolutely required.
  • Experience in all phases of projects from concept through implementation is preferred.
  • Operating experience is a preference but not required.


Project Development Experience

  • The ideal candidate will have completed at least one project cycle from start to finish.
  • Demonstrated ability to partner with and bring together cross functional groups to successfully manage early study phase deliverables, and build long standing relationships. Proven experience in project and stakeholder management for projects of similar magnitude and complexity. 
  • Ability to act as a Qualified Person under Canadian regulations is desired


Stakeholder Management and License to Operate

  • Proven experience in project and stakeholder management for projects of similar magnitude and complexity.
  • Solid foundation and experience in permitting and contemporary community relations practices and standards.
  • Good working knowledge of relevant Canadian and Chilean legislation is a preference but not required.
