Director, Projects

The Director, Projects is accountable for the detailed engineering, procurement and construction of Teck’s large projects in collaboration with, and on behalf of, Teck’s business units. Teck’s large project portfolio includes both Brownfield and Greenfield projects ranging in capital. The Director, Projects will play a pivotal role in leading a cross functional team to deliver solutions that bring the greatest value to Teck. Reporting to the Vice President of Project Development, the role includes significant interaction and collaboration with Teck’s  leadership team. Essential skills include strategic thinking, industry and business acumen, vision and change leadership, exceptional execution and leadership, effective communication and interpersonal skills; and integrity and transparency.  


The position will be based in Vancouver, British Columbia.

  • Responsible for the overall delivery of large Project through Feasibility, engineering design, procurement, construction and pre-commissioning within scope, budget and schedule aligned to the business case and Teck’s values of safety and sustainability. 
  • Functional leadership of the disciplines of Project Management, Engineering Management and Construction Management.  
  • Promote and embed the culture of Teck’s Courageous Safety Leadership program within Projects.
  • Ensure that all aspects of the Project implementation adhere to Teck's policies, procedures and Health, Safety, Environment and Community (HSEC) management standards.
  • Provide leadership in the implementation and adherence to Teck's HSEC policy. Take a lead role in developing and ensuring a robust HSEC program and culture is embedded in all aspects of project development.
  • Provide leadership and champion a culture of continuous improvement, innovation and value creation. Develop a "learning organization" ensuring "lessons learned" and "better ways" are captured and implemented on all large Projects as well as documenting them for other Teck projects.
  • Work with the Teck Project Development Framework (TPDF) Champions to ensure that stage gating and independent peer review processes are fully integrated to deliver the most benefit to the Study Owners and Executive Management.
  • Ensure that the social, environmental, regulatory processes are effectively managed in all Projects. Ensure that all governmental and regulatory approvals required to be attained are identified, defined and adequately resourced in order to achieve timely approvals of Teck's Projects.
  • Lead a team of project professionals, providing overall alignment, coordination and guidance. 
  • Drive Project team culture focused on safety, sustainable development, innovation and excellence in execution and develop resource plans ensuring staffing requirements are met in a timely and effective means. Motivate and provide inspiration to the project teams.
  • Provide direction to identify strengths, critical issues and areas of risks/exposure in the execution of large projects.  Ensure that risks to Teck and the Project are identified and mitigated based on best practices in risk management.
  • Support the development of key project team members through mentoring and coaching.
  • Ensure the execution philosophy and strategy provides maximum value for Teck.  Ensure a project execution framework to deliver quality, value and timeliness of projects. 
  • Manage the overall relationships with multiple EPCM contractors, specialist contractors and consultants.
  • Develop relationships and coordinate with Teck functional groups necessary to meet the project objectives in a timely manner.
  • Provide regular updates to the VP and Business Owner as well as regular reporting and strategic advice to the Project Boards, Teck senior management and occasionally to the Teck Board of Directors.
  • Provide leadership with the Project Development Group's (PDGs) 5 Year Plan in alignment with the PDG's Guiding Principles Develop and maintain open and effective communications within the Projects team, with internal Teck departments and with external stakeholders.




Industry Experience

  • Ideal candidate to have more than 20 years’ experience in project execution for mining specific projects.  Experience within the Copper and/or Coal industry is a strong preference but not absolutely required.
  • Experience in all phases of projects from concept through implementation is preferred.
  • Operating experience is a preference but not required.


Project Development Experience

  • The ideal candidate will have completed at least two project cycle from start to finish.
  • Demonstrated ability to partner with and bring together cross functional groups to successfully manage project execution, and build long standing relationships. Proven experience in project and stakeholder management for projects of similar magnitude and complexity. 
  • Ability to act as a Qualified Person under Canadian regulations is desired


Stakeholder Management and License to Operate

  • Proven experience in project and stakeholder management for projects of similar magnitude and complexity.
  • Solid foundation and experience in permitting and contemporary community relations practices and standards.
  • Good working knowledge of relevant Canadian and Chilean legislation is a preference but not required.
