Role Overview
Reporting to the VP, Health and Safety and Chief Medical Officer, the Director, Health & Safety, Projects (the “Director”) will lead and support Health and Safety at the Enterprise and Projects-levels. They will provide overall direction and guidance to the Projects group on all Occupational Health, Safety & Hygiene programs, along with leading and advancing significant enterprise H&S initiatives globally.
The primary responsibility is that all Major Projects comply with enterprise, regional and local regulations and implement a structured Health and Safety management system with emphasis on the proactive identification of workplace and activity-related hazards, required controls and residual attributed risk. The Director must ensure appropriate, capable teams are assigned to all Projects in coordination with each Project Director/Manager to implement H&S strategy, programs, records management, system audits, incident investigation and training on a global scale across all Projects. The overriding focus is the identification and effective control of exposures with the potential to result in serious injury, illness and fatality.
The Director will also be an integral member of Teck's Enterprise H&S team.
This position is based in Vancouver, BC or Toronto, ON with an expectation of regular travel to Teck Projects including those at high-altitude.
Key Responsibilities
- Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
- Champion Teck’s Courageous Safety Leadership culture, ensuring safety is a core value and that everyone goes home safe and healthy every day
- Interpret and align project-specific H&S objectives with Teck’s enterprise strategies, policies, and standards
- Actively contribute to enterprise-level H&S initiatives, promoting strategic alignment across Teck’s assets
- Integrate H&S principles throughout the project lifecycle—from planning and engineering to procurement, construction, and commissioning
- Serve as a key member of the Project Leadership Team, collaborating with functional leads and advising senior leadership on H&S risks, trends, and mitigation strategies
- Ensure strong integration of enterprise H&S policy within the Projects group by:
- Supporting management alignment and visible safety leadership
- Providing tools for high-level risk assessments, especially for serious injury, illness, or fatality risks
- Empowering teams to make courageous decisions to stop or defer unsafe work
- Oversee contractor H&S performance, ensuring expectations are embedded in contracts and monitored during execution
- Lead and mentor a team of H&S professionals, fostering knowledge sharing and professional development
- Monitor and analyze safety performance metrics, identify trends, and support corrective actions to meet performance targets
- Lead critical incident response and investigations, ensuring alignment with enterprise protocols and effective follow-up
- Conduct audits and inspections, ensuring corrective actions are implemented and lessons learned are shared across projects
- Maintain alignment with Project Directors and Managers to ensure consistent H&S program implementation and continuous improvement
- Provide timely and accurate H&S reporting to senior leadership, including dashboards and performance summaries
Qualifications
- Degree in Health, Safety, Environmental Sciences and/or a related field
- 15+ years of experience in site safety, including 10+ years in construction projects with increasing responsibility and leadership
- Experience working on Owners teams and with EPCM contractors to develop integrated H&S programs
- Proven leadership in enterprise-level H&S initiatives across diverse geographic and cultural contexts
- Strong understanding of H&S management systems, risk assessment, critical controls, and regulatory frameworks
- Demonstrated ability to:
- Design and implement occupational health & hygiene programs
- Conduct audits and peer reviews targeting high-risk activities
- Analyze incidents using recognized methods (e.g., ICAM)
- Develop and report on H&S performance indicators
- Communicate best practices and lessons learned to drive continuous improvement
- Ability to recognize and mitigate risks across varied climates, terrains, and project stages
- Bias for action with a track record of delivering safety improvements through collaboration
- Spanish language skills and experience in Canada, US, Chile, Peru, and Mexico are strong assets
- Ability to travel and work up to 30% of the time, including at high-altitude operational sites
Pay Range: CAD $176,000 - $217,000 per year
The actual amount offered is determined based on the successful candidate’s relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity.
