Reporting to the Senior Vice President, Operations, North America, the Director, Health & Safety is accountable for providing leadership, guidance, and support on delivering health, and safety strategies, processes, and systems across the North American region, inclusive of producing and non-producing assets.
With a solid understanding of health & safety and change management practices, the successful candidate will coach operations in the development and implementation of systems, policies and procedures, helping to identify and manage fatal risk and life-changing hazards, work with sites and the enterprise H&S function to identify and manage illness and injury risks, ensuring compliance with regulations and Teck’s health, safety and occupational hygiene strategy. Additionally, the successful candidate will demonstrate leadership, championing mental health and wellbeing practices, fostering a culture that embraces psychological safety, high performing teams and radical transparency.
To achieve success in the role, the incumbent will require the development of close working relationships with the operations, projects, and corporate functional groups. By identifying, managing and promoting continuous improvement in health and safety leadership, the successful candidate will help lead Teck to an enhanced culture of safety among our employees and contractors to drive Teck’s vision of Everyone Going Home Safe and Healthy Every Day.
Responsibilities

Be a courageous safety leader, leading by example, and fostering a proactive safety and sustainability culture based on Courageous Safety Leadership.

Foster Teck’s Purpose and Values through all interactions and activities undertaken.

Work with site leadership to create alignment with Teck health and safety programs.

Work collaboratively and in unison with the corporate health and safety team to develop/implement/sustain health and safety processes and systems that make our sites better, reduce duplication, and foster a culture of care.

Establish health and safety objectives that consider operational priorities and are aligned with Teck objectives.

Provide coaching, leadership and mentorship to operational health and safety teams.

Ensure efficient processes and systems are established to measure and improve health, hygiene and safety performance within the context of ongoing performance, operational hazard exposures and defined performance targets and measures.

Produce accurate, timely and informed reporting of safety metrics to senior management

Participate with operations to conduct and lead quality investigations and report on serious incidents. Ensure that critical findings from investigations are shared to allow learning, and follow-up to ensure recommendations are implemented.

Organize, schedule and participate in a regular system of audits at operations for conformance with corporate policies, procedures and standards, legislative requirements and industry accepted good practice.

Monitor legislative developments and assist operations with regulators. Inform senior leadership of the implications of existing, new and evolving legislative initiatives in active jurisdictions and the associated liabilities.
Qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree in any relevant discipline
- 10+ years of industrial experience in leadership roles in both health & safety and operations. (Experience in the global mining or extractives sector is beneficial though not a requirement.)
- Comprehensive understanding of health and safety processes and systems with a focus on implementation and continuous improvement of these processes and systems.
- Experience with fatal risk management including hazard identification and critical control development.
- Knowledge of occupational hygiene and medical assessment/surveillance programs
- Experience in development and implementation of behavioral based safety concepts such as time in field and visible felt leadership
- Leadership and demonstrated experience with ICAM or similar incident investigation methodology.
- Solid knowledge of the impact of regulatory requirements in North America (or similar setting).
- Strong project management skills.
- Effective interpersonal and influencing skills with demonstrated ability to build strong relationships and coach individuals and teams across all levels and functions.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to consolidate and report large data sets to identify short and long-term trends and insights for analysis and informed decision-making.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to travel domestically and internationally to operating and project locations. Travel time is ~35-50%. Ability to work at high altitude (over 14,000 feet) elevations and in severe climates is a requirement. Key success factor is building relationships across the sites to drive the required changes and site presence is a critical component of achieving this

Salary Range: $172,000 - $213,000
The actual base salary offered is determined based on the successful candidate’s relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity.
