Cost Control Specialist Co-op

The ideal candidate for the Junior Cost Control Specialist Co-op position should be interested in large capital resource construction projects with a focus on engineering, construction, cost, and schedule. Through this placement, the student will develop an understanding of working in a professional environment and gain exposure to Teck’s Projects Group delivery strategy and how it is applied and implemented within Teck’s operations. The Co-op will be responsible for implementing project cost control methods and procedures, and maintaining cost control systems on Teck’s Red Dog projects (RDM004 Aktigiruq & Anarraaq Extension Program and RDM015 Aktigiruq & Anarraaq Access Road). These responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, working within the different phases of project delivery including engineering, progress, cost, schedule, and safety and assisting with various tasks that are an integral part of this process.

 

If you are not currently located in the area of this co-op position, you must be willing to either commute or relocate to the surrounding area for the entire duration of the co-op term. You must also currently be a student enrolled in a Canadian post-secondary institution and will be enrolled throughout the duration of the co-op term (you will also be returning back to the post-secondary institution once the co-op term is completed). Proof of a valid work permit will also be required, if applicable.

Salary Range: $4,700 - $6,000 / Month

Salary is commensurate with the number of academic semesters and prior co-op experiences completed. 

Responsibilities

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures; participate in assigned safety training courses

  • Cost Tracking: Monitor and record project expenses to ensure they align with the project budget

  • Reporting: Input contractor data into Teck’s cost tracking system, Unifier, to facilitate reporting requirements

  • Progress Tracking: Monitor project timelines, achievements, and quantities to ensure that the projects stay on track in both a construction and study scenario

  • Scheduling / Planning: Review data to understand the relationship between time and cost 

  • Identify cost/schedule variances and initiate change management in both a construction and study scenario

  • Collaborate with the Contracts/Procurement team to understand project requirements, commitments, and purchasing strategies

  • Collaborate with the Engineering and Construction team to understand project design and technical requirements

  • Collaborate with Team Members from SERA (Social, Environmental, and Regulatory Approvals) to understand Teck’s commitment to the environment and the communities in which we operate

 

Qualifications

  • Working towards an undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering or Finance 

  • Organized, adaptive, and a motivated learner  

  • Attention to detail, punctual, and can work independently as well as in a team  

  • Interested in learning about the various aspects of project delivery  

  • Proficient in using Microsoft Office suite; specifically Outlook and Excel  

  • Exposure to PowerBI is an asset
