Reporting to the Corporate Counsel & CPO, the Corporate Counsel is responsible for the partnership and collaboration with Corporate Counsel & CPO, Teck’s operations and diverse departments to provide legal advice and strategic guidance across employment, human rights, privacy and pension, and support compliance with applicable provincial and Federal legislation in Canada. Responsibilities
- Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
- Collaborate with Company operations and departments to provide legal support, mentorship and training on employment and human rights matters applicable to Teck’s workforce. This is not limited to hiring, termination, accommodation scenarios, offer letters, workplace investigations, workplace policies, and employee relations
- Advise on the entirety of Canadian workplace legislation with a particular focus on applicable BC legislation
- Advise on all aspects of Canadian privacy law relevant to the company’s Canadian offices and operations and support the handling of data breaches and related investigations
- Provide mentorship on all components of pension law applicable to the company’s BC-registered pension plans and other retirement plans. This includes RISP and top-up plans, alongside support with the preparation of triennial assessments for the company’s BC-registered pension plans
- Support and advise on employment, pension, and privacy matters related to mergers and acquisitions, divestitures and joint ventures
- Work in collaboration with all levels of employees including in-house counsel, HR Professionals, and other internal partners, as well as external counsel
- Manage all tasks involving highly confidential matters with professionalism and discretion
Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree or equivalent legal qualification is required
- Minimum 5 years' experience as a Canadian legal practitioner is required
- Member of the BC Bar or eligible to be called is required
- Experience in BC employment law and human rights matters is required
- Experience in pension and/or privacy law is an asset
- Outstanding English verbal and written communication skills and excellent interpersonal skills are required
- Strong technical and drafting skills, oriented by solutions with legal analytical skills, and good judgment with respect to risk
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, prioritize competing demands, and meet deadlines with minimal supervision
- Ability to communicate with employees at various levels as well as outside parties. Capacity to maintain discretion, confidentiality, integrity, and professionalism in doing so

Salary Range: $147,000 - $182,000
The actual base salary offered is determined based on the successful candidate’s relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity.
