Role Overview
Reporting to the Sr. Process Engineer, working in the Metallurgy & Technology group, the Technologist, Metallurgy & Technology (temporary) is responsible for conducting technical investigations that contribute to the development and improvement of operating plant processes and process control and providing technical expertise to Trail Operations on operating and maintenance problems.
This position will support the RAZ/TFO business areas with opportunities for exposure to other business areas.
Key Responsibilities
- Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
- Conduct technical investigations and contribute to the development and improvement of operating plant processes and process control; provide technical assistance to Trail Operations on metallurgical and/or maintenance problems; provide technical data and technical assistance to Metallurgy & Technology personnel and to technical or supervisory personnel in Operations
- Technical investigations include process sampling surveys, measurement of operating parameters and compilation of data from various sources and visual observations
- Design, construct, operate, troubleshoot and modify laboratory, pilot or plant scale equipment; assist with start-up and process development stages of a project; write operating procedures and contribute to the development Controlled Documents
- Maintain effective communication with other technical personnel in various business areas, with supervision, operations and trades personnel; facilitate communications between other groups at Trail Operations; instruct operations personnel on procedural changes related to projects
- Perform routine and non-routine testing procedures and sampling techniques; develop new testing and sampling procedures under minimal supervision; perform physical and chemical analyses of plant samples; perform laboratory simulations to assess the effects of proposed changes on plant processes
- Increase the effectiveness of Metallurgy & Technology by assisting in the training of Metallurgy & Technology Technologists and Process Engineers and assisting them to solve operating problems
- Bring solutions to problems directly to either the attention of supervision or task force; in consultation with supervision, outline changes to be made and their objectives; contact resource people within the company for assistance in solving problems
- Use knowledge of metallurgical processes and instrumentation employed at Trail Operations to adjust quickly to new plants or processes; may undertake assignments in other business areas or Teck properties
Qualifications
- Graduate of a recognized Institute of Technology or University in metallurgical, mineral processing or chemical sciences or certified with Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of British Columbia (ASTTBC) in a relevant field is required
- A minimum of 5 years relevant experience with working knowledge of physical, chemical and metallurgical processes is required
- An ability to work both independently and as part of a team to contribute to the success of a technical group is required
- Highly organized self-starter with strong time management skills are a must
- Proficiency in computer systems: MS Office, including Word, PowerPoint and Excel is required.
- Experience with Trail’s process data systems, (e.g. PDH, LIMS, GE Aps) or metallurgical modelling software an asset
- Experienced with working at heights using fall protection systems, including ladder access to elevated platforms
- Must be physically capable of lifting and transporting equipment
Pay Range: $46.80/hr
The actual amount offered is determined based on the successful candidate’s relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity.
