Senior Process Engineer - Technical Services, Trail

Reporting to the Section Leader, Environmental Technology, the Senior Process Engineer is initially accountable for leading water treatment technology development and technical services projects, participating in the execution of new environmental technology implementation projects, providing technical consulting services to sites and new projects, using technical networks within and external to Teck to develop solutions to Teck’s environmental and process challenges, and supporting the on-going development of a healthy environmental technology project portfolio. As the nature of our portfolio changes, the incumbent will be expected to be able to make key process engineering contributions to the other areas of Teck’s business, including oil sands and coal processing as well as base metals minerals processing and/or extractive metallurgy.  The incumbent will lead small or support large teams of internal and external personnel as required to meet project objectives. The incumbent should have a reasonable working knowledge of technology development practices, good data analysis and problem solving skills, and emerging critical and conceptual thinking abilities. The position will be based at Technical Services, Trail (TS,T) in Trail, BC with varying amounts of domestic and international travel as required by portfolio, project and personal / personnel development needs.

 

Responsibilities:

 

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Establish and promote the maintenance and continual improvement of a safe, healthy, and environmentally-responsible working environment through a courageous personal commitment to TS,T’s over-arching policies and Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) Management System as well as EHS policies and management systems at off-site locations.
  • Act as a technically-competent environmental or process engineer with developing subject matter expertize in some key areas for water treatment technology and other process engineering projects by clarifying issues, identifying and screening potential solutions, resolving uncertainties associated with promising solutions, and demonstrating the efficacy of the selected solutions at bench-scale to pilot- or demonstration-scale as required to optimize and de-risk selected solutions.
  • Lead smaller and support larger water treatment and other process engineering technology projects through the stages outlined above with key success factors aligned to the project business case, including health and safety, environmental compliance, technical outcomes, schedule, cost, and quality. Manage and coordinate operational activities with multiple groups, including internal technology development teams, equipment manufacturers and technology providers, engineering companies, on-site contractors, and subject matter experts.
  • Lead or co-lead small or support larger techno-economic studies, including scoping or prefeasibility engineering activities, to evaluate and rank potential technology solutions.
  • Lead small teams or support aspects of technology implementation execution projects for new environmental or process technologies such as detailed process engineering and/or commissioning and initial optimization phases.
  • Lead small teams or support in-the-field optimization studies and test work to make recommendations for improved operation of existing environmental assets.
  • Provide both detailed and high-level consulting services to sites and project teams on issues spanning the environmental and process engineering spectrum, including serving as a qualified person when required for regulatory reporting and provide support to internal governance practices.
  • Use existing networks within and external to Teck to clarify issues and develop solutions to Teck’s environmental and process engineering challenges. Stay current on environmental and process engineering issues and leading-edge technologies through literature reviews, site visits, conferences, and regular interactions with key vendors and subject matter experts.
  • Participate in external open innovation/technology development organizations and projects as requested, including project leadership roles.
  • Support the on-going development of a healthy project portfolio by maintaining regular communication with key Teck personnel at sites and support/leadership teams to identify and clarify emerging issues. Provide input into developing high-level initial project/program plans with associated resource needs and ranking of potential projects as part of the Technical Services technology portfolio management process.
  • Effectively communicate key messages and recommendation through authoring of high-quality reports and delivery of effective presentations to all levels of the company.
  • Perform other responsibilities as Technical Services matures.

 

Qualifications:

 

  • Graduate degree, with a strong preference for a post-graduate degree, in process engineering. More than six (6) years of relevant, progressive experience. Should have or be eligible for professional registration with relevant organization.
  • Working knowledge of environmental and process engineering challenges faced by a diversified multinational mining company and the potential viable solutions to the challenges is required.  Working knowledge of the activities and business of mining and mineral processing is desirable.
  • Experience in technology development, including acting as a subject matter expert and technical project manager for smaller technology projects is required along with advanced data analysis, problem solving, and critical thinking skills. Should have experience in techno-economic evaluation of technology solutions as well as change management. Experience in operations and/or capital projects execution is desirable.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are required. The ability to work in Spanish is an asset.
  • Emerging ability to lead and support highly-collaborative multi-disciplinary teams with a focus on delivering value as well as promoting sharing of best practices across operations and projects.
  • Emerging experience with organizational dynamics and good conflict resolution skills.
  • Highly-motivated self-starter with the ability to work under minimal supervision with managing several priorities/projects simultaneously to meet firm deadlines.
  • Ability to travel frequently and flexibility to successfully work in different sites and offices that Teck operates in.
