Role Overview
Teck is looking for an experienced Raw Materials Manager to join our team at our Trail Operations, one of the world's largest fully integrated zinc and lead smelting and refining complexes. Reporting to the Manager, Commercial Services & Public Affairs, the Raw Materials Manager is accountable for the procurement and administration of metallic raw material, secondary feed materials, recycling purchases, transportation, customs, and the sale of intermediate metallurgical products for Trail Operations with a primary focus on the identification of metallurgically acceptable concentrates and other metal feed sources that meet Trail's short and long term metal production goals to maximize profitability.
Key Responsibilities
- Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
- Develop, implement and evaluate zinc and lead concentrate buying strategies that will enhance Teck's competitive position and maintain Trail's short and long-term metal production
- Maintain an awareness of trends in the industry to ensure effective sourcing of zinc and lead concentrates via ongoing communication with internal contacts such as Concentrate Marketing, Exploration and Corporate Development, and external mining and trading contacts worldwide, ranging from prospectors to corporate presidents including dealing with other major smelters and metal trading houses to source metallurgical feeds
- Responsible for producing financially optimized feed and metal production forecasts and plans for Trail Operations
- Ensure the profitability of the organization by identifying and taking advantage of business opportunities in the acquisition of zinc and lead concentrates, intermediate products, recycling streams, and other metal feed sources including the negotiation of effective contracts to both purchase these products to optimize profitability, and metal production
- Sell complex intermediate metal products which cannot be economically or effectively treated at Trail Operations
- Responsible for building and maintaining effective partnerships with key stakeholders for Teck involving pre-processing and movement of feeds including Waneta reload centre (Trimac), battery breaking (KC Recycling), and Vancouver Wharves terminal (Pembina)
- Ensure Teck maintains high quality weighing and sampling standards for metal feeds that meet or exceed contractual requirements and industry standards
- Responsible for monitoring supply chains to ensure Trail Operations production targets are met including management of the local Trail rail yard with Kootenay Valley Railway (KVR), setting priorities for inbound and outbound
- Manage all valued metal purchases and maintain at all times the gold, silver, lead and zinc priced positions as per Teck hedging policy, and recommend to Teck Metal Sales when hedging on the terminal markets may be necessary
- Ensure the development and implementation of the specialized computer model that assists in decision making related to the acquisition of concentrates and metal production targets
- Ensure Trail Ops adheres to Canada Customs Act requirements and regulations
- Develops and manages reporting professionals and other staff including selection, coaching, performance management, conflict resolution and all other people practices
Qualifications
- An undergraduate degree in Metallurgy or Chemistry or equivalent in either applied science or pure science is required. Secondary importance placed on specialization in supply chain or materials management is an asset
- Knowledge of supply chain management practices, applicable statutes and regulations is an asset
- Knowledge of contract law and jurisprudence is an asset
- Experience with the budgeting process is an asset

Pay Range: CAD $147,000 - $198,000 per year
The actual amount offered is determined based on the successful candidate’s relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity.
