Role Overview
Reporting to a Sr. Process Mineralogist, the Mineralogist/Geologist will support mineralogical and material characterization projects by delivering high-quality data tailored to the specific project's purpose within acceptable turnaround times. These projects include processing, validation, interpretation, integration, and reporting. A key focus of this role is data processing, which covers TIMA, geochemical analyses, optical microscopy, XRD, XRF, and micro-XRF datasets.
The mineralogist will be part of a diverse team working alongside mineralogists, geologists, and metallurgists. They will learn from a variety of projects, ranging from exploration to operational plants within Teck. The position will be based within the Geometallurgy & Mineralogy team. This team oversees geometallurgical projects across Teck and operates a laboratory equipped with a range of analytical techniques, making it the preferred partner for mineralogical analysis within the company. This group is part of Teck’s Technical & Planning Group, Processing, headquartered in Vancouver. Personal development and career growth are essential aspects of this role.
The position will be based at Technical Services in Trail, BC (TST), located in the heart of the West Kootenays, offering access to outstanding outdoor recreation, including Red Mountain Ski Resort and extensive hiking and mountain biking trail networks.

Key Responsibilities
- Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures.
- Establish and promote the maintenance and continual improvement of a safe, healthy, and environmentally responsible working environment through a courageous personal commitment to TST's over-arching policies and Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) Management System, as well as EHS policies and management systems at off-site locations.
- Participate and assist in mineralogical and geometallurgical projects under the supervision of a Senior Mineralogist/Geologist. This includes planning mineralogical jobs, which consist of ensuring sample preparation is adequate for technicians to execute, monitoring progress, and processing the data.
- The primary function will be data processing, validation (QA/QC), and interpretation of Tescan TIMA data. These will be combined with other datasets such as optical microscopy, XRD, and XRF. In some cases, micro-XRF data will also be available.
- Prepare mineralogical reports, including data summary, interpretation, and presentation to the internal clients.
- Support the coordination of operational activities within the mineralogical laboratory, including technical staff and external maintenance staff.
- After adequate training, support the technicians with operating the analytical instrumentation, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), Micro-XRF, and Tescan TIMA.
- Support and participate in routine care and maintenance of the equipment.
- Effectively communicate key messages and recommendations as an embedded team member through high-quality technical reports and presentations.
Qualifications
- Graduate degree, with a strong preference for a post-graduate degree in Mineralogy, Geology, Environmental Mineralogy, Geometallurgy, or Earth Sciences.
- More than one (1) year of experience in a commercial or university lab
- Demonstrated ability to learn about new fields through knowledge development and deep critical and conceptual thinking.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, specifically in English, are required. The ability to communicate in Spanish is beneficial.
- Demonstrated ability to support highly collaborative multi-disciplinary teams to deliver value and share best practices across operations and projects.
- Highly motivated self-starter with the ability to work on several priorities/projects simultaneously to meet firm deadlines.
- A high technical proficiency using various types of computer software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.) is crucial for this role. Advanced data analytics skills is a plus.
- Knowledge of the Tescan TIMA software is a must.
- Able to travel to Teck mines and exploration sites if needed.
Pay Range: CAD $105,000 - $130,000 per year
The actual amount offered is determined based on the successful candidate’s relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity.
