Teck is looking for an experienced Manager, Environment to join our team at our Trail Operations, one of the world's largest fully integrated zinc and lead smelting and refining complexes. Reporting to the General Manager, Trail Operations, the Manager, Environment develops and manages the short- and long-term environmental strategy for the site. Development and implementation of the strategy is made within the context of the regulatory framework, the direction of Teck Resources Ltd. and the operational capability of Trail Operations. This position directs the operation of the environment services group and provides technical support to capital projects. The role pursues continuous improvement of management systems within Trail Operations which support environmental requirements.  The position also represents corporate environmental interests with collaboration across other Teck Operations, various industry associations, regulatory agencies and other stakeholders.

Responsibilities:

 

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Establish and promote the maintenance of an Environmental Management System and conform to the Corporate and Trail Operations Safety and Health Programs.  Ensure personal compliance with Control Document #3843 – Role and Responsibilities for the Safety & Health System
  • Adhere to, and provide leadership in application of, Teck’s HSEC Management Standards and all relevant Guidance Documents
  • Become an active member of Teck’s Environmental Community of Practice and look for ways to improve effective/ efficient delivery of strong environmental performance at Trail and across Teck through collaborative efforts on the wide variety of issues the portfolio presents
  • Manage programs and staff to develop policies and strategies to address environment issues; to encourage best management practices and to minimize environmental risk
  • Identify and coordinate the solution of administrative, technical and strategic problems of an environmental nature with senior management, cross functional teams, government personnel and the public. Provide advice and direction regarding compliance issues and due diligence practices
  • Maintain effective relations with government officials administering the various regulations and legislation concerned with environment and cooperate in the establishment of cost effective regulatory initiatives
  • Ensure that permits governing the control of emissions, effluents and solid waste are managed and administered as required
  • Interact with Trail senior management to ensure the development and establishment of strategic plans and long-term goals for the management of environment
  • Ensure that policies and programs are developed in consultation with Trail management to establish and maintain strong environmental performance
  • Adopt a management style and develop an organization that creates an environment of cooperation, and promote employee initiative through the use of effective communication based on performance management principles
  • Provide effective liaison with media, public groups and other stakeholders with regard to environmental aspects.  Develop effective stakeholder consultation on Company policies, objectives and priorities on environmental issues
  • Participate, in coordination with corporate, in industry association and regulatory activities as the representative for Teck on matters related to the environment, to ensure the corporation’s interests are being supported
  • Work with the Projects and Operations teams on environmental capital plans and projects to ensure short and long term environmental objectives are met 
  • Commit to timely incident and quarterly corporate reporting requirements

Qualifications:

 

  • Degree in Environmental Science or Environmental Studies or equivalent
  • 15+ years of experience in the Environmental field, 5+ years at a manager level
  • Understanding of mining/smelting related environmental issues
  • Experience in processing plants – resource industry preferred
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to manage consultants and interact with public in the performance of duties
  • Strong analytical and technical skills
  • Ability to work in a self-directed manner utilizing the support and skills of other technical staff in developing and executing work plans in accordance with objectives and schedules
  • Demonstrated ability to be well organized in planning work and be able to weigh and prioritize competing issues with multiple constraints
  • Demonstrated self-motivation, willingness to learn, strong work ethic and eagerness to take on new challenges
  • Advanced computer skills to enable analysis of data and satisfy reporting requirements

Salary Range: $172000.0 - $213000.0

 

The actual base salary offered is determined based on the successful candidate’s relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity.
