Aquatic Ecosystem Specialist

Reporting to the Superintendent, Environmental Remediation, the Aquatic Ecosystem Specialist is responsible for project management, technical reviews, scientific support and advice for Teck Trail Operations’ aquatic ecosystem projects in the West Kootenay region. The position requires data evaluation and reporting in accordance with requirements of internal and external stakeholders, as well as effective interaction with regulators, the public and other external stakeholders.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures.
  • Establish and promote the maintenance and continuous improvement of a safe and healthy working environment through personal commitment to the principles of Trail Operations’ Safety and Health Policy.
  • Oversee environmental monitoring and assessment programs related to aquatic ecosystems in areas around Trail Operations, including Teck’s Aquatic Receiving Environment Monitoring Program.
  • Provide effective control of the assigned project budgets, minimize expenditures and manage contractors and consultants working on aquatic ecosystem projects; ensure cost, quality and contract schedule meets Teck requirements.
  • Ensures contractor compliance with Teck safety and health requirements; conducts regular site inspections to ensure work performed meets specified requirements; documents observations and deficiencies; ensures appropriate action is taken; and reports findings to Teck management.
  • Maintain effective relations with the community, stakeholders and the government agencies that will ensure acceptance of the ongoing ecosystem management efforts.
  • Work with the Community Relations team and other department members to respond to public and media inquiries related to environmental remediation matters.

 

Qualifications:

  • Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in environmental sciences, biology, ecology, or related fields.
  • Professional status in BC, or eligible for registration (e.g. R.P.Bio.) or membership, or eligibility for membership, in the BC Institute of Agrologists.
  • Eight or more years’ proven work experience scoping and leading environmental monitoring and assessment programs (including ecological risk assessment).
  • Experience in managing aquatic environments with industrial impacts, aquatic ecosystem monitoring and aquatic ecosystem restoration projects.
  • Knowledge and experience with BC and Canadian environmental regulations, including the Environmental Management Act, Contaminated Sites Regulation, Species at Risk Act, Water Sustainability Act, Canadian Environmental Protection Act and Fisheries Act.
  • Strong analytical and technical skills, plus advanced computer skills to support data analysis and satisfy reporting requirements including demonstrated experience in use of statistics.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently develop and execute work plans in accordance with the department’s objectives and schedule, combined with an ability to weigh and prioritize competing issues with multiple constraints.
  • Ability to facilitate technical discussion in workshop settings regarding aquatic ecosystem monitoring and management.
  • Ability to manage consultants and interact with public and regulators in the performance of duties.
  • Demonstrated self-motivation, willingness to learn, strong work ethic and eagerness to take on new challenges.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, including strong technical writing skills.
