Role Overview

Teck is looking for an experienced Analytical Chemist to join our team at our Trail Operations, one of the world's largest fully integrated zinc and lead smelting and refining complexes. Reporting to the Analytical Services Superintendent or designate, the Analytical Chemist is accountable for technical aspects of meeting the short-term and long-term analytical testing requirements of Trail Operations.

 

This role is based in the welcoming community of Trail, situated in the beautiful West Kootenay region of southeastern British Columbia. Here you will find outdoor adventure at your fingertips! This position offers relocation assistance, and a compressed workweek with alternating Fridays off. Come experience what work life balance is all about!

Key Responsibilities

· Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures

· Lead laboratory activities for safe and compliant operation, such as Standard Operating Procedures, instrument maintenance, sampling, testing, data review and validation

· Provide guidance, coaching, and training to the analytical technicians as required

· Interact with the engineering, environmental and operations team to understand their analytical needs

· Develop testing pathway to address the customer’s needs, which includes gaining an understanding of what problem or question the customer is trying to solve and defining a protocol for the study

· Assess, recommend, and optimize analytical equipment and

resources to deliver efficient, economical, and compliant analytical services in accordance with ISO 17025 and changing regulatory and user needs

· Utilize industry contacts, attend conferences and review literature to stay current on leading edge technology to help develop and implement more economical analytical procedures or new technology

Qualifications

· Minimum Bachelor of Science in chemistry or an associated technical degree; Master of Science in Chemistry (M.Sc) or PhD Chemistry is preferred

· Minimum 7 years of relevant experience, or a minimum of 5 years with an advanced degree

· Mastery of mass spectrometry and atomic spectroscopy, including ICP-MS, ICP-OES, and AAS, with full knowledge of industry practices typically obtained through advanced education combined with experience

· Must have knowledge of the theory and practice of elemental analyses of metallurgical samples

· Experience of practicing quality control and/or quality assurance (QC/QA) following standards set by ISO17025

· Strong skills in analyzing problems, diagnosing root cause, and applying corrective or improvement actions

· Experience with Laboratory Information Management Systems considered an asset

· Experience in other analytical chemistry techniques, (i.e., Titrations, XRF, Ion Chromatography etc) considered an asset

· Strong computer skills, including proficiency in VBA, Python, or related systems, with the ability to understand and apply mathematical concepts for laboratory data interpretation

· Effective communication skills including verbal, written and presentation skills

· Proven ability to work effectively both independently and in a team-based environment

· Strong multi-tasking and organizational skills and willingness to be flexible and adaptable to changing priorities

Pay Range: CAD $105,000 - $130,000 per year
