Role Overview

 

Reporting to the Project Manager, RD MLE Project, with a matrix-relationship to the Director Projects – Health, Safety, the Senior Lead, Occupational Health & Safety, Projects is responsible for ensuring the effective planning and implementation of Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S) programs for all aspects of project execution of the RD MLE Project. 

 

The role has the equal project responsibility for ensuring that the practices and principles of OH&S ‘in Design’ and ‘in Construction’ are incorporated into all scopes of project activities in order to eliminate fatalities and serious injuries during both execution of project activities and future operations. The overriding focus for OH&S risk management is the identification and effective control of all exposures – across the lifecycle of the project and subsequent operations – with the potential to result in serious harm to people (through occupational health and hygiene exposures, disease, or physical trauma).

 

In addition to project responsibilities, the role forms part of a broader functional leadership team overseeing and supporting assurance of performance and the continued improvement of OH&S processes and practices within Projects and across all Projects group-led projects.

 

The incumbent works directly with the Project Manager RD MLE and both Teck and EPCM/Prime Contractor Project Managers, Construction Managers and all Engineering professionals to ensure implementation of H&S program and processes. Outside of Projects, key relationships will be with the Manager, H&S RD Operations, the Superintendent/Supervisor team for H&S at RD Operations and as required, with the GM of RD Operations. The role oversees, coaches and supports the performance of the RD MLE - Project’s team of OH&S professionals and practitioners.

 

This role will be a 2 weeks on / 2 weeks off schedule (2x2).

Key Responsibilities

 

  • Be a Courageous Safety Leader, champion and adhere to health, safety, environmental and sustainability at Teck.
  • Responsible for the quality and completeness of the project’s OH&S Management Systems and Management Plan
  • Responsible for ensuring the project has access to the most appropriate tools to enable effective and verified risk management in order to identify and mitigate all ‘major’ and ‘severe’ risks associated with self and contractor-managed activities, equipment and physical, environmental and social exposures in support of successful project delivery.
  • Provides leadership and mentorship to OH&S staff, provides recommendations on the allocation of resources and develop and monitor non-project OH&S budgets.
  • Develops and implement programs to build organizational capacity for evaluation, development and delivery of OH&S (and as applicable risk management) training to project personnel.
  • Ensures efficient and compliant processes are established to record and communicate OH&S and risk management performance within the context of ongoing performance, operational hazard exposures and defined performance targets and measures.
  • Ensures available resources to respond to critical workplace incidents, personally leads investigations into significant events to provide high quality post-incident investigation. sharing of learnings and provision of support to all involved individual.
  • Liaises with RD Operations leadership to ensure that OH&S programs are consistently implemented and that best practices are shared across the group and amongst industry partners; and
  • Drives a strong sense of professional community for Project OH&S practitioners and supports the professional development of the team
  • Champions practices and programs to ensure Projects and Contractor performance meets OH&S Goals, and as applicable, broader Sustainability Goals, into project design and execution
  • Contributes to defining Projects OH&S strategic priorities and initiatives and the professional development of junior members of the Projects OH&S team.

Qualifications

 

  • Degree in Occupational Health & Safety or a related discipline, or equivalent experience, with typically 10+ years in site safety, supervision, auditing, and risk management within the construction or mining industries.
  • Professional OHS certification considered an asset
  • Strong commitment to safety as a core value, with the ability to champion and embed Teck’s Courageous Safety Leadership culture.
  • Ability to develop, implement, and continuously improve HSEC programs, systems, and training across all levels of the organization.
  • Capacity to identify hazards, assess risks, and apply effective mitigation strategies across diverse environments and project stages.
  • Proficiency in leading audits, reviews, and continuous improvement initiatives targeting high-risk activities and control effectiveness.
  • Judgment and confidence to make and support critical decisions, including stopping or deferring work when safety conditions are unacceptable.
  • Analytical ability to investigate incidents (e.g., ICAM) and translate findings into practical improvements.
  • Skill in monitoring, reporting, and interpreting leading and lagging safety indicators using corporate systems.
  • Thorough understanding of OHS management systems, hazard identification, risk assessment, hierarchy of controls, and critical control management.
  • In-depth knowledge of applicable regulatory frameworks (local, national, and international).
  • Comprehensive knowledge of MSHA regulations, including underground mining requirements.
  • Experience working in underground environments would be considered an asset


Pay Range:
 USD $101,000 - $125,000 per year

The actual amount offered is determined based on the successful candidate’s relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity.
