Role Overview
Reporting to the Controller, the Senior Corporate Accountant is responsible for the full cycle accounting of Teck American Incorporated’s (TAI) corporate ledgers. The position is responsible for advance and complex accounting transactions, treasury accounting, and corporate accounting. Tasks include month-end accruals and journal entries, balance sheet reconciliation and analysis, internal control and SOX compliance, and financial statement and management reporting.
The position is responsible for leading and reviewing the work performed by the accounting team and includes the Accounts Payable, Payroll Functions, and Consolidation upload functions. The incumbent is a strong general ledger power user and supports the accounting department by being the go-to person for ERP and G/L use. They are system savvy and will assist team members with Great Plains, Jet Reports and other advanced accounting tools.
The position is a key liaison to other departments including Tax, Legal, Treasury, Exploration and Consolidation, and is comfortable communicating and working with Managers and Controllers from various departments and locations across Teck with minimal supervision.
This is a two-year term employment based in Spokane. We are working on a hybrid schedule, with 3 days in the office.
Key Responsibilities
- Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
- Prepare the month-end full cycle accounting for TAI companies and ledgers
- Prepare the month-end reporting for TAI companies and subsidiaries
- Prepare the month-end OneStream Consolidation submission and Head office deliverables for TAI companies, including advance data mapping and certification requirements
- Work closely with accounting staff at other operations and offices to ensure the accuracy and efficient recording of intercompany transactions
- Review the AP and Payroll function and provide guidance to team as needed
- Address SOX controls and compliance requirements for TAI/Spokane office and liaise with Internal Auditors and PwC as needed
- Perform the accounting for decommissioning and restoration provisions including the effect of discount rates and inflation.
- Ensure proper accounting of costs according to company agreements and transfer pricing studies relative to Trail products for the Spokane Business Units.
- Accounting for pension, post retirement, and post employment benefits.
- Assist with the preparation of information for use by TAI’s Tax Department and information required by Teck’s internal and external auditors.
- Prepare legal entity financial statements for TAI companies used for tax filings and other statutory requirements
- Supervise the payroll administrator, by reviewing and coaching payroll administrators work and deliverables.
- Review and approve accounting close, by reviewing coding and processing of information performed by accounting staff in Spokane.
- Prepare GL accounting system reports (report writing experience) and experience with accounting ledger upgrades/updates as business process lead
Qualifications
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation or equivalent with working knowledge of IFRS, GAAP and experience researching the Accounting handbook as needed
- 3 to 5 years of experience working for public accounting firm or large organization (preferably publicly traded)
- Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) used in the United States of America, International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) used in Canada, tax rules and company tax elections
- Proficient computer skills, particularly spreadsheet, word processing, accounting ledgers, and consolidation systems
- Ability to work under pressure with minimal guidance to meet tight deadlines
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communicational skills
- SOX and internal control environment experience
- Strong attention to detail and analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Leadership competencies such as personal leadership skills, management of self and learning agility
- Able to build positive relationships through effective and clear communication
- Results-oriented with independent problem solving ability
Pay Range: $90,000 - $110,000
The actual amount offered is determined based on the successful candidate’s relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity. This full-time, Long Term Temporary position offers the employee (and their eligible dependents) a comprehensive flexible benefits package, including medical, dental, vision, and basic life insurance. Employee will be eligible to participate in the 401k plan after completing 1 year of service. The employee is also covered by Long-Term Disability insurance. In this role, the employee will accrue a minimum of 10 days of vacation leave and 12 paid sick days (1 per month) throughout the calendar year, along with ten paid holidays.
