Senior Lead, Water Sciences

Reporting to the Manager, Water Sciences, the Senior Lead, Water Science is responsible for providing technical and strategic direction for matters related to surface water quality, quantity monitoring and evaluation programs including providing decision-making support in the areas of environmental and regulatory risk management, mitigation, and compliance to support the ongoing implementation of the Elk Valley Water Quality Plan. You will be overseeing Teck’s regional water quality, hydrology, and climate monitoring programs.

 

To be successful, we are looking for someone with attention to detail who can identify environmental and compliance risks and provide senior leadership, technical direction, and decision-making support in advancing programs to reduce these risks. Excellent leadership and mentorship skills, as well as the ability to build positive relationships with multiple internal and external stakeholders would be vital. An adaptable professional who can prioritize demands in a fast-paced environment, and has strong technical writing, presenting, data analysis, and reporting skills, will thrive.

Responsibilities:

 

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Provide leadership in regulatory engagement, risk identification, risk management, and incident response
  • Provide technical and strategic advice to sites for matters related to the impact of operational water management on water quality, quantity, and compliance
  • Communicate findings of monitoring programs in a clear and understandable format 
  • Prepare and submit data and reports to meet regulatory and other commitments, including presentation of technical information 
  • Provide senior level technical direction as a project advisor for emerging water challenges that could affect regional water quality
  • Lead and supervise a team of professionals responsible for delivery of regional surface water monitoring programs 
  • Provide mentorship, support, and guidance to increase team expertise and drive continuous improvement
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with operations teams, government agencies, Aboriginal groups, and other local communities of interest

Qualifications:

  • Degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Chemistry, Biology or other related field, or a relevant combination of education and experience
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience providing technical and strategic direction on operational water related risks and challenges associated with resource management 
  • Technical knowledge of federal and provincial compliance practices and regulations related to water quality, quantity, and resource development 
  • Technical understanding of water chemistry and experience with risk evaluation related to water quality, quantity, and receptors such as aquatic and human health
  • Excellent project management experience with a track record that includes management and technical direction of multiple environmental projects and budgets in excess of $5 million 
  • Proficient in environmental data management, analysis, and reporting
  • Hold a professional designation and meet the BC provincial requirements of a qualified professional for applicable monitoring and assessment programs is an asset
