Senior Engineer or Scientist, Water Quality Management

Reporting to the Manager, Water Modelling – Water Quality Management, the Senior Water Quality Engineer or Scientist is responsible for leading a team in the application of the Regional Water Quality Model and water quality data analysis to support mine planning, permitting, and water quality management decisions at our Coal operations.

Our water team is growing and expanding to address complicated challenges, utilizing cutting-edge technology. You will lead a team of scientist and engineers who are focused on applying and improving the water quality model to support local and regional scale mitigation planning decisions and effects assessment for permitting applications.

Responsibilities:

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Lead and review work managed by our team of water quality scientists, engineers, and consultants  
  • Collaborate with project managers and environmental teams in the development and optimization of groundwater, surface water, and climate monitoring programs aimed at reducing uncertainty in the water quality models 
  • Provide senior review of modelling documentation for environmental assessment applications and regulatory submissions, as well as in-house modelling 
  • Collaboration with mine and water management planners to inform the best decisions for sustainable mining  
  • Coordinate consultants to complete water quality modelling work to support mine plan evaluations, regulatory applications, or support the planning, design, and operation of water quality mitigations 
  • Support development and maintenance of site-specific planning tools associated with water quality predictions and water balances 
  • Support improvement and updating of water modelling tools 
  • Develop and support the use of processes to standardize routine modelling tasks 

 

Qualifications:

  • Engineering or Science degree in an environmental science related field, such as Hydrology, Geochemistry, or Geoscience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience 
  • Professional designation in a relevant field, or eligible to register 
  • Minimum eight years of relevant professional experience with a focus on water quality assessment that include water quality modelling 
  • In depth technical knowledge of the development and application of water quality models, specifically using GoldSim  
  • Mining experience in mine planning, water management, or environment is an asset
