Mine Water Planning Engineer

Reporting to the Senior Supervisor, Local Scale Planning, the Mine Water Planning Engineer, is responsible for supporting the development of integrated, local scale plans at the tributary level to address water quality, water quantity, human health, aquatic health and aquatic habitat through design and technical review of tributary mine and water management plans.

To be successful, we require someone with outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, who can effectively collaborate with partners at all levels across the organization. We are looking for a motivated self-starter, who can work under minimal supervision in a fast-paced environment and manage several priorities including participating in leading change and making recommendations. Analytical, problem solving, and decision-making abilities are vital for success.

This is an exciting chance to work collaboratively with different departments and specialists dedicated to sustainable mining in the Elk Valley surrounding our four open-pit metallurgical coal mines, with a particular focus on mine planning and mine water management activities to support the overall health of regional aquatic ecosystems.

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Provide technical input on mine water planning processes, mitigation costs, economics, designs, plans, and regulatory guidelines
  • Proactively integrate water management objectives, treatments, and best practices into mine plans
  • Provide mine water engineering design and planning support for existing and new technologies, incorporating them into local scale plans
  • Develop and maintain strategies, schedules and budgets for water management studies to improve aquatic ecosystem health
  • Ensure regulatory conditions and commitments are met



  • Degree in Mining, Geological, or Environmental Engineering or in a related field 
  • Registered, or eligible to register, with Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia (EGBC); Teck will support eligible employees with their EGBC registration 
  • Five years in mine planning and or project management
  • Experience in water management related to mining activities would be an asset
