Manager, Biodiversity, Reclamation, and Lands

Reporting to the Director Environment, the Manager, Biodiversity, Reclamation, and Lands is responsible for leading, developing and supervising a team of terrestrial impact management professionals responsible for the delivery of terrestrial impact management programs across all Teck’s Coal operations. The focus of this role includes driving operational and closure reclamation planning and implementation, regional terrestrial effects assessment and management, private and conservation land management, defining and implementing offsetting programs, and developing and executing on strategic initiatives.

Responsibilities:

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Lead and direct the development of detailed closure plans for individual operations
  • Identify areas for innovation through research and development, to ensure continuous improvement of Teck’s reclamation, closure and biodiversity strategies
  • Perform annual reclamation costing and bonding calculations
  • Lead and advise the development and implementation of the regional terrestrial effects strategy; this includes assessment and management, and mitigation programs that consider identification, selection and management of offset opportunities
  • Implement Teck’s biodiversity strategy in the context of the Coal BU, on a regional and individual operation basis
  • Oversee the environmental aspects of BU land disposition and management; interact with private landowners and timber rights holders; develop strategies on private or other lands for conservation purposes
  • Lead and supervise a team of professionals who are responsible for the delivery of reclamation, closure and biodiversity plans and programs
  • Work closely with the BU, and internal and external communities of interest

 

Qualifications:

  • Post-graduate Degree or Diploma in Engineering, Science, or an environmental-related field
  • Minimum fifteen years of experience in resource extraction terrestrial impact assessment and management; demonstrated experience in ecological sciences application; demonstrated experience with land use planning and strategic thinking
  • Excellent project management experience, with a track record that includes management and technical direction of multiple environmental assessments, and project budgets in excess of $15 million
  • Proven success in leading and developing a team
  • Technical knowledge of federal and provincial reclamation, mine closure and biodiversity practices and regulations
  • Ability to provide senior technical editing of environmental assessment applications and regulatory submissions
  • Demonstrated abilities in Indigenous, Community and Government engagement
