Lead or Senior Lead, Assurance

Reporting to the Manager, Environmental Performance, the Lead or Senior Lead, Assurance is responsible for developing, executing, and supervising the environmental aspects of the Health, Safety, Environment and Community (HSEC) management system assurance program. The assurance program will assess compliance with HSEC compliance obligations and conformance with environmental risk mitigation controls at both the operating sites and business unit level. This position will conduct field inspections and site visits in the Elk Valley.

To be successful, we are looking for a leader with the highest integrity, who also has excellent interpersonal and communication skills. This person will collaborate with other departments and senior technical experts, and work in a multi-disciplinary team environment. The ability to be discrete, objective and manage material in a confidential manner is vital.

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Develop and implement an assurance program to assess compliance with HSEC compliance obligations and conformance with environmental risk mitigation controls at both the operating sites and business unit level 
  • Collaborate with others to identify high potential risk controls and develop verification criteria
  • Create standard digital inspection templates and schedules for both the operating sites and business unit level
  • Regularly conduct assurance checks at the operating sites
  • Perform data analysis and identify trends indicating emerging environmental risks 
  • Develop, track and report on performance metrics



  • Degree, Diploma or Certification in areas related to safety, including Education in Health, Safety and Environment management, including compliance, auditing, risk management, emergency response and assurance, in combination with meaningful experience
  • Minimum five years’ experience in environmental compliance, Environmental Management Systems (EMS), or auditing
  • Proven experience in designing and implementing environmental controls, and conducting effectiveness reviews
  • Technical knowledge of relevant federal and provincial environmental legislation, standards, and effective industry practices
