Coordinator Environment, Fish Monitoring

Reporting to the Lead, Fish Monitoring, the Coordinator Environment, Fish Monitoring is responsible for supporting the planning and delivery of fish monitoring programs, studies, and activities in the Coal Business Unit, including all Elk Valley site-specific major (operational) permitting applications. The Coordinator Environment, Fish Monitoring will also assist in the planning and direct supervision of field work within and outside operational mine-site boundaries. This role will also ensure all fish monitoring, studies, and activities adhere to provincial and federal regulations as well as Teck’s safety and environmental standards.

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Schedule and plan resources required to successfully support fish monitoring programs, studies, and other fish habitat management activities
  • Supervise direct report(s) while coaching, mentoring, and providing opportunities for career planning discussions and activities
  • Supervise and direct multiple teams of contractors and consultants and ensure project scope, schedule, and budget are adhered to while maintaining compliance with applicable safety and environmental standards
  • Collaborate with mine operations to ensure safe and efficient management of contractors and consultants
  • Track and coordinate input of fish and fish habitat monitoring, studies, and management plan data into centralized data management systems
  • Maintain accurate and timely records of budget, accruals, invoicing, and other cost tracking duties
  • Maintain and update monthly progress reports on related monitoring projects, studies, and programs
  • Identify areas for innovation to ensure continuous improvement of Teck’s fish and fish habitat monitoring, studies, and activities
  • Communicate emerging issues to Senior personal as necessary



  • Degree or Diploma in Science, Engineering, or environmental-related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum three years of experience in fisheries
  • Proven leadership abilities in supervising contractors and consultants in a team setting; experience supervising direct report(s) is an asset
  • Experience in working with Indigenous Nations, regulatory agencies, and other communities of interest
  • Technical knowledge and demonstrated experience in fish and fish habitat monitoring programs, studies, and fish management activities such as fish salvages and relocations
  • Working knowledge of provincial and federal regulatory approvals practices, legislation, and regulations
