Automation Technician, Water Quality Management

Reporting to the Automation Supervisor, the Automation Technician is responsible for designing, programming, and commissioning instrumentation and control systems for water treatment projects and operations that drive value to Teck. The successful candidate will work as part of the Water Quality Processing Department in close collaboration with a robust team of specialists to safely deliver and maintain a diverse set of technology that is redefining the way Teck operates its water treatment systems.

 

The Automation Technician will work closely with the Information Systems and Technology group, following best practices, and guiding the strategy regarding processing systems and technologies. Technologies include process automation, remote operations, thin client human machine interfaces, optimization systems, machine learning, and operator safety systems.

 

To be successful, we are looking for quick learner with excellent communication and interpersonal skills who are highly motivated, organized, and detail oriented. Someone who can work independently but also apply a collaborative approach to problem-solving and think strategically to deliver a valuable service strategy. The ability to prioritize, and deliver timely, high-quality results in a fast-paced and dynamic environment is vital in this role.

This position is a six-month contract role with the potential to become permanent. 

 

Responsibilities:

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Work as a part of a highly collaborative team with a focus on delivering value and promoting sharing of best practices across operations
  • Work with plant engineers, external vendors, operators, and management to coordinate projects and assignments
  • Understand and develop control systems from engineering documents such as Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams, control narratives, cause and effect, and alarm and setpoint List
  • Provide design and implementation support to operations improvement projects and MOCs
  • Program Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) and Human Machine Interface, including Allen-Bradley, Wonderware System Platform, and other PLC platforms
  • Collaborate closely with internal and external teams to monitor for system problems, and provide emergency support to resolve complex technical problems
  • Develop and maintain documentation of standards, best practices, and new initiatives
  • Define, implement, support, and continuously improve cutting edge systems that optimize safety, sustainability, and productivity
  • Adhere to departmental change control policies and procedures

 

Qualifications:

  • Engineering Technologist Diploma in Electrical or Instrumentation, or related subject area, or equivalent experience
  • Registered or eligible to become registered with Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of British Columbia (ASTTBC)
  • A minimum of one year experience working with industrial process control hardware and instrumentation
  • Proficiency in INSTY 01/04/05/06/07 as described in the Canadian Technology Accreditation Criteria for an instrumentation technologist
  • Knowledge of electrical controls, motor control centers, and power distribution equipment
