Senior Project Engineer

Reporting to the Senior Project Leader within Teck’s Technical Service group, the Senior Project Engineer will be responsible for the execution of activities throughout the various stages of technical development projects from initiation to start-up. The successful applicant will be exposed to a wide range of technical projects and must be proficient at meeting defined project goals while possessing a strong interest in learning and problem solving.  Previous project management and technical operation management experience of potential candidates will be taken into consideration for this role.

The position is located in the Richmond office with travels as required based on project needs (up to 50%).


  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Participate in the development and implementation of overall project strategies, schedules, costs and criteria
  • Identify, understand, and quantify process and project risks that may impact process performance or project deliverables
  • Lead cross-functional process development, plant commissioning, plant start-up and plant optimization teams
  • Execute staff assessments and provide training, development and mentoring of junior engineers, EITs and technical personnel
  • Direct the development and completion of engineering deliverables required for advancing technologies in a timely and cost effective manner (e.g. engineering packages, conceptual desktop level studies, and capital and operating cost assessments and reports)
  • Deliver projects with key success factors aligned to the project deliverables, including health and safety, environmental compliance, schedule, cost and quality
  • Carry out technology scanning for relevant and practical technological advancements to improve Teck’s overall business
  • Analyze and review design specifications and drawings for completeness and practicality, and provide support for associated groups
  • Manage technical inputs to non-engineering disciplines such as procurement

 Required Qualification:

  • 10-15 years of experience in some or all of the following roles:
    • Technical service for mineral processing, water treatment, or metal refining plants
    • Commissioning and startup of processing plants
    • Project management
    • Engineering design
  • Bachelor degree (or above) in a relevant engineering discipline (Chemical, Mechanical, Mineral Processing, Environmental)
  • Registered, or eligible to register, as a professional engineer in the province of British Columbia (EGBC)
  • Ability to build and lead a highly collaborative team with a focus on delivering value and promoting the sharing of best practices across operations and projects
  • Strong multi-disciplinary knowledge and technical problem solving abilities
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to multi-task and perform effectively under minimal supervision
  • Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
  • Flexibility to travel while supporting projects as needed

Preferred Qualification:

  • Strong critical thinking and problem solving skills
  • Knowledge of project implementation management processes
  • Experience in process modelling and flowsheet design
  • Familiarity with instrumentation and process control system design/implementation
  • Experience in test campaign design and technical program development
  • Experience building business cases for technology implementation

Practical hands-on experience in a technical setting

The Richmond facility focuses on sustainable external and internal growth opportunities through the potential application of our proprietary hydrometallurgical technology and the development of novel process designs. The Richmond facility also provides technical support services for a number of projects at various Teck sites. Services include technical project management, piloting and site support as well as analytical services. Significant travel is required for this position.
