Tailings Engineer - Construction, Tailings & Water

Reporting to the Senior Engineer, Tailings & Water the Tailings Engineer - Construction, Tailings & Water is a developmental position. Responsibilities range from carrying out discreet tailings and/or water assignments, to initiating and conducting long-term tailings and/or water management projects, development of budgets and cost management, and involves regular supervision and management of consultants and contractors, and coordination with other operational groups. The Tailings Engineer – Construction provides on-site construction management and applies technical engineering expertise to Tailings & Water projects.

Rotation schedule will be 2 weeks on-site with 2 weeks off-site

Responsibilities:

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Complete assigned work in a professional manner, including necessary measurements, calculations, analyses, interpretations, reporting and recommendations.
  • Communicate effectively with operating, analytical and maintenance groups to ensure optimum utilization of resources and onsite staff.
  • Provide ongoing engineering technical support to operating, technical, and maintenance groups for optimization of tailings and water management processes.
  • Assist in long- and short-term planning, management, and execution of field activities completed by internal and/or external resources.
  • Develop subordinate professionals by participating in their selection, training, evaluating their performance, and by following, enforcing and administering company policies in a fair and equitable manner.
  • Co-ordinate and execute short-term and long-term projects to improve site tailings and water management and cost performance.
  • Project management on a range of project and activities.  Define project scopes, milestones and success criteria in coordination with senior management and identified stakeholders.
  • Perform project execution processes including, management of change, safe work plans, standard operating procedures, execution plans, requests for proposals, budgets, KPI tracking, milestones, material take-offs, scheduling of resources, cost forecasting, development of plans, and consultant and contractor supervision.
  • Manage changes in project scope and schedule by identify potential conflicts and devise contingency and risk mitigation plans.
  • Analyze, identify, and resolve operational and construction issues on projects and ensure efficient interpretation of all design drawings and adherence to all Quality Control / Quality Assurance procedures for projects.
  • Ensure that projects associated with the Tailings Management Facility are completed according to approved plans, specifications and development codes/permits.
  • Review and monitor operations and field activities for contractors, subcontractors, and operations personnel in areas assigned.  Prepare field reports and assessments as required.
  • Track contracts, scopes of work, purchase orders, budget, contract commitments, schedules and communicate progress to management.
  • Provide technical expertise to tailings impoundment operations and develop engineering solutions to problems.
  • Develop an understanding for onsite coordination with various stakeholders and effectively communicate with those stakeholders throughout the project planning and execution.  
  • Perform administrative duties including taking notes during meetings, preparing correspondence, and managing files for project execution and tailings management.
  • Other responsibilities as required or as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Engineering (mining, civil, geotechnical, environmental or related) with a minimum of 3 years relevant experience, tailings construction and operations experience is preferred.
  • Experience with the design, analysis and engineering of dams, pumping systems, water conveyance systems, or related structures/systems.
  • Experience managing multiple engineering and construction project resources, schedules, and budgets.
  • Experience working on mining, heavy civil or industrial construction projects, managing multiple resources including internal stakeholders, external contractors, and consultants.
  • Proficient in MS Office suite and AutoCAD Civil3D is required.
  • Experience and proficient with the installation, deployment, and monitoring of environmental and geotechnical instrumentation and data analysis.
  • Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment with minimal guidance.
  • Strong ability for data analysis and interpretation with minimal guidance.
  • Capable of working with all levels of the organization and in a team environment.
  • Must be a highly motivated self-starter with the ability to work with limited supervision.

Successful candidates must be fully vaccinated against infection by COVID-19, subject to an exemption approved by Teck Alaska.
