Role Overview
Reporting to the Lead, Water Resources the Tailings & Water Engineer-in-Training (EIT) is a progressive position. The Tailings & Water EIT will support the management, operations, governance and regulatory compliance for tailings and water management at Red Dog Mine. Responsibilities including carrying out technical, scientific, environmental, geotechnical, surveillance, and reporting activities and working with operational teams to supporting the site’s short and long term tailings and water management.
Key Responsibilities
• Protect the safety and health of employees by promoting safe working procedures and health programs in accordance with Teck Alaska policy and appropriate regulations.
• Complete assigned work in a professional manner including necessary measurements, calculations, analysis, interpretation, reporting, and recommendations.
• Assist in managing site’s water resources and water quality, including maintenance and updates to the operational water balance in GoldSim, development of water management plans, ensuring adherence to Teck’s Water Governance initiatives, updating and maintaining water quality mass balances & predictions, and assessment of ARD interception.
• Assist in water quality and predictive water quality modeling (geochemical modeling, geochemist workbench, PHREEQC).
• Provide technical and administrative support in the management, governance and regulatory compliance for Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) and support overall Team objectives.
• Assist in active water management activities by collecting, analyzing, and monitoring data related to tailings, water, and land management.
• Deployment and troubleshooting of monitoring equipment and software including (but not limited to):
o Vibrating Wire Piezometers
o Thermistors
o Turbidity Sensor
o Survey Monuments
o Water Quality Monitors
• Aggregating, organizing, managing, and analyzing data from instrumentation (piezometers, thermistors, water quality, etc), groundwater, surface water, subsurface water, pumping rates, climate, demographics, etc., typically in database environment.
• Communicate effectively using data manipulation/analysis in spreadsheets and databases utilizing automation techniques such as macros, VBA, etc.
• Technical writing for operations and project documents, manuals and training programs, as well as technical review of various reports from external consultants.
• Participate in meetings and technical discussions with external professionals responsible for delivery of water related programs across the operation.
• Prepare presentation materials and participate in Red Dog’s external engagement activities, including community meetings, agency site visits, projects consultations, and other communications related to water management.
• Support advancement of advanced technology and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Develop an understanding of the Company’s organization and accomplish both group and individual goals.

Qualifications
• BSc. Engineering in Mining, Civil, Geotechnical, Geologic, Environmental, Chemical, or related field.
• One (1) to three (3) years in mining industry or equivalent Co-Op or Internship within the mining industry.
• Valid Drivers license
• Strong analytical and organizational skills, with attention to detail. Proven capacity in practical problem solving and critical thinking.
• Proficiency in MS Office Suite. Experience with GIS or other planning tools and software is considered an asset.
• Strong oral and written communication skills in both formal and informal settings, including technical writing, data analysis and reporting.
• Ability to work effectively in a team environment and engage with diverse stakeholders.
• Knowledge of mine tailings & water management principles, environmental regulations, and mine water resources industry standards. Knowledge of relevant legislation and traditional knowledge is an asset.
• Experience in arctic environments would be considered an asset.
• Must be willing to work outdoors with a potential exposure to extreme climatic conditions.
• Ability to work productively with nominal supervision and work independently.
• Ability to work collaboratively and productively as a team member,
• Capable of working with various levels of the organization and in a team environment.
• Knowledge of geotechnical software (GeoExplorer) and Trimble software is an asset.
• Experience with water and load balance software (GoldSIM) is an asset.
• Experience and knowledge of using advanced analytics tools such as Power BI.
• Ability to communicate and implement recommendations to the Tailings & Water team related to management.
• Willingness and ability to take on additional tasks as needed.
• Capable of working with all levels of the organization and in a team environment.
