Role Overview
The Facility Operating Technician (Water & Wastewater System Operator) performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled technical and maintenance work in the operation, maintenance and repair of water and wastewater treatment facilities and systems
Rotation schedule will be 3 weeks on-site with 3 weeks off-site
Reports to: Facilities Maintenance Supervisor
Key Responsibilities
• Maintain knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods and procedures used in Potable water and Wastewater treatment plant maintenance and operation activities; working knowledge of laboratory procedures and practices
Wastewater Duties
• Monitor the performance of all equipment, gauge and SCADA screen in the treatment plant and pump stations; record statistical data concerning plant operations; maintain, operate, repair and replace equipment as necessary; chart lab test results for trend analysis and maintain accurate records of analyses and test results; evaluate data, act accordingly to data analysis and write reports as required
• Operate, maintain and repair malfunctions at the wastewater treatment plant; repair gauges, pumps, filters and other controls and equipment
• Service and Maintain Lift stations, Pumps and levels
• Collect samples and identify concentrates of chemical, physical or biological characteristics of wastewater required in accordance with local, state and federal requirements; gather and test wastewater samples for plant efficiency reports as required.
• Perform quality control tests on lab equipment and lab analyses; evaluate procedures and results for accuracy and determines appropriate methods. Assure that plant operates within required standards, regulations and both Federal and State of Alaska compliance requirements
• Maintain knowledge of State and Federal rules governing wastewater discharges and worker’s safety
• Contain and dispose of hazardous wastes generated the by the lab. Calibrate, modify or repair instrumentation and control equipment including recorders, flow meters and other wastewater quality monitoring equipment
• Respond to complaints regarding the wastewater plant or system, evaluate situation; explain findings and provide solutions to supervisor
• Fill out monthly DMRs and ensures their accuracy
• Load and Unload haulage transfer equipment.
• Assist in the training of lower-level employees to increase their skills in the operation,
• Operate a variety of power tools and maintenance equipment used in the water department. Perform manual labor when required including snow and ice removal, chemical and material handling.
Potable Water System Duties
• Inspect and/or repair chlorine analyzers and other Potable water treatment equipment associated with the Potable water plant, pumping stations, wells, meters, and other elements of the water supply and distribution systems at frequent intervals to ensure that all aspects of the systems are functioning properly
• Assist in maintaining water quality by taking water samples and maintaining proper operation of Potable water treatment equipment. Maintain a variety of records relating to inspections, maintenance activity, water supply, treatment, consumption, etc.
• Respond to complaints regarding water leaks, pressure loss or no water; evaluate situation; explain findings to supervisor. Contact site residents where services will be discontinued and explain when services will be shut off and how soon it will be turned back soon
• Ensure the proper maintenance of equipment and tools by cleaning and checking equipment and tools after use, perform routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and refer defects or need repairs to supervisor
• Clean equipment
• Perform all duties in compliance with both Federal and State of Alaska requirements
• Monitor performance of electrical systems, circuits or equipment of the treatment plant
• Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications
• High school diploma or equivalent
• Seven (7) years’ experience in Potable Water Plant and Wastewater Operations
• Must have current Level II or higher State of Alaska Water Treatment Plant Operators Certification
• Must have current Level I or higher State of Alaska Wastewater Treatment Plant Operators Certification
• Communicate effectively with other crew members and departments about assigned tasks and ensure carryover and updates of completed tasks
• The ability to adhere to high safety standards
• Team player and be able to communicate well with others
• Highly motivated self-starter with the ability to perform tasks with limited supervision
