Role Overview
Reporting to the Manager Digital Systems & MIS, the Senior Telecommunications Specialist position is responsible for project planning, system design, repair and maintenance, upgrade, and strategic direction for the operation’s VHF/UHF radio communication systems in support of business objectives.
The schedule is rotational and will be 2 weeks on-site and 2 weeks off-site beginning on Mondays.
Key Responsibilities
• Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
• Manage and maintain a MOTOTRBO Capacity Plus Multi-Site implementation consisting of 9 radio shelters and 22 Motorola SLR repeaters
• Conduct programming, configuration, and firmware updates of two-way radios using Motorola's Radio Management application suite
• Project planning, system design, repair and maintenance of VHF/UHF radio networks, monitoring system equipment, answering technical questions, providing training and assisting to the customer with problem resolution or directing customers to the correct resources
• Development and oversight of system standards, technical specifications, maintenance, system documentation and training. System documentation is to include equipment inventory, site as-built drawings and system diagrams of all radio systems including cable mapping, fiber interconnections and all cross connects
• Performing annual tower, antenna, site maintenance, and inspections
• Support includes, but is not limited to, installations of antenna systems, site construction and tower buildouts, minor trades work, inspection of contractor's work per corporate standards
• Use of electronic testing equipment, general construction equipment and hand tools, power tools, tower climbing and safety equipment, and may work around heavy equipment such as a crane or
• Travel to remote radio sites located throughout the property on unimproved roads including helicopter transportation
• Leadership forms the basis of a safe and healthy workplace and involves making a commitment to put health and safety into action. The candidate will lead by example; ensuring that safe and healthy working conditions are maintained. The Senior Telecommunications Specialist should possess the ability to engage effectively with personnel at all levels of the organization
• Perform other related duties as assigned
Qualifications
• Ten (10) years or more experience performing the duties as outlined above combined with four (4) years of experience in highly technical, solid-state circuit design within the past six years involving audio frequencies, radio frequencies (VHF and UHF), control circuits, logic design, display systems and digital information transport via TDM, MPLS and fiber protocols
• Valid driver’s license
• Experience with Motorola’s MOTOTRBO Capacity Plus Multi-Site installations
• Additional experience and/or technical training in electronics or electrical engineering may be substituted for educational requirements a year for year basis
• Understand and be proficient in testing antenna systems and components and analyzing test data
• Proficient in installation, repairs, and alignment of antenna systems
• Possess general knowledge of construction standards, methods, and processes, including plumbing, electricity, carpentry, roofing, locks and locking systems, and others
• Able to utilize laptop computer to enter pertinent data needed by drafting staff and use computer applications
• Well-developed interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a team environment
• Highly motivated and able to work independently to achieve desired outcomes without supervision
• Able to read and understand plans and blueprints and possess excellent written and verbal communications skills
• Able to communicate effectively with a wide variety of people including crew, contractors, vendors, and other agency personnel
• Able to plan and support projects as a job leader and supervisor
• A solid understanding of safety regulations, protocols, standards, and best practices when working around industrial equipment
• Proficient with radio procedures
• Possess a General radio Telephone license or the equivalent APCO certification
