Role Overview
The Seasonal Environmental Technician is responsible for the day-to-day collection of field samples and data, and implementation of specific regulatory, permit or other requirements that apply to Red Dog as assigned and determining the best technology to use in order to remain compliant with various permits and regulations.
Reporting to: Environmental Technical Supervisor
Key Responsibilities
• Collect, document, and process environmental samples and monitoring data in accordance with approved procedures and schedules
• Ensure samples are properly handled and shipped to laboratories within required holding times
• Apply proper sampling techniques and labeling practices to maintain data quality and integrity
• Maintain accurate field notes and prepare compliance documentation and reports using spreadsheet and database software
• Travel to monitoring locations by vehicle, helicopter, small aircraft, boat, snowmachine, or on foot
• Conduct fieldwork safely in Arctic conditions while identifying and addressing workplace hazards
• Follow company policies and standard operating procedures and communicate safety and operational requirements when necessary
• Perform basic troubleshooting of field monitoring equipment
• Use basic hand and power tools to support field installations and maintenance activities
• Perform other related duties as assigned
Qualifications
• High School Diploma or equivalent
• Valid driver’s license
• Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office applications
• Proficient with Adobe Acrobat software
• Work effectively within a team environment
• Perform tasks with limited supervision after training
• Strong commitment to safe work practices
• Willingness to work outdoors in extreme weather conditions
• Work in remote locations with limited services and variable Arctic weather conditions
• Demonstrated organizational and observational skills
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Interest in developing skills within environmental monitoring and compliance programs
• Experience with Aquarius software, Campbell Scientific equipment, in-stream flow measurements, and particulate monitoring considered an asset
• Perform basic field equipment troubleshooting
• Safely use basic hand and power tools
Physical and Field Work Requirements
• Lift and carry field equipment, including sample coolers, weighing up to seventy (70) pounds
• Hike several miles over uneven terrain, including tundra and rocky creek beds
• Safely wade in streams or shallow water while conducting monitoring activities
• Work in wet, muddy, cold, or otherwise challenging outdoor conditions for extended periods
• Willingness and ability to travel to field locations by helicopter and other aircraft as required
