Reporting to the Safety and Health Lead, the Safety and Health Officer is responsible for supporting, promoting and leading in the implementation of effective safety and health programs for Red Dog operations and capital projects. The Safety and Health Officer supports effective safety and health training programs, provides prescribed MSHA training, ensures a high standard of recordkeeping and department administration and monitors workplace safety through regular inspections and audits.
Responsibilities:
• Responsible for the day to day health and safety programs at the mine and port facilities
• Maintain safety and health standards in compliance with company, OSHA and MSHA, regulations and appropriate risk procedures to protect the assets of the company
• Work with all levels of supervision in health and safety, measuring exposures by regularly inspecting work sites; informing supervisors of unsafe practices, conditions and possible safety and health hazards
• Provide visible leadership in promoting a safe and healthy worksite. Actively participate and provide leadership with Teck and Contractor personnel in identifying workplace hazards, unsafe conditions and work practices. Participate and provide guidance in monthly safety meetings, tool box meetings, SIMOPS meetings, Field Level Risk Assessment (FLRA) and Job Safety Analysis (JSA)
• Participate and provide Safety & Health leadership, support, and knowledge during incident investigations. Perform as an ICAM facilitator or peer reviewer during incident investigations
• Coordinate all safety and health issues and reports, keeps government regulatory agencies appraised of developments as required, and follows up on recommendations and work method changes, as necessary
• Maintain positive relationships with government regulatory agencies (MSHA, OSHA, Coast Guard, Homeland Security), and ensures prompt compliance with new rules and regulations and assists government inspectors in their investigations
• Accompany inspectors and/or insurance underwriters as they audit the operation, from a Safety and Health perspective, follow up on the recommendations for improvements, and ensures that the interest of the company is adequately addressed. Documents and communicates the findings of inspections and investigations with the site management team
• Responsible for developing and facilitating training programs in relation to supervisory skills or overall safety and health within the property. (Supervisor S&H Training, Hazard Recognition/CFR 30 Training, Introduction to Hazard Identification, etc.)
• Highly encouraged to become a volunteer Courageous Safety Leadership facilitator
• Support the Industrial Hygienist to conduct dust and noise sampling, air monitoring, biological monitoring, hearing conservation and the respirator program
• Provide security as required for the property mine, port and airport in accordance with the State and Federal regulations which includes non-lethal and lethal methods. Participate and conduct security training and firearm instruction
• Submit written reports to management, supplying all pertinent information on industrial health performance and highlighting problem areas with statistical reports
• Act as the Safety and Health Lead as required
• Perform other related duties as required
Qualifications:
• High School Diploma or equivalent
• Five (5) to eight (8) years of experience in Operational Health & Safety
• Possess knowledge and understanding of Federal, State and Local laws and regulations regarding occupational safety and health.
• Ability to work in a team environment and work effectively across all levels of the business
• Demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills
• Skilled in hazard recognition and workplace inspections
• Conduct investigations, determine causes and recommend or initiate corrective preventative measures.
• Experience in the mining industry is preferred.
• Experience in Emergency Response (fire, spill, medical) is preferred
• Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
