Reporting to the Safety and Health Manager, the Lead, Safety and Health develops and leads effective emergency response programs, fire protection systems, risk mitigation programs, effective occupational health and hygiene measures, which includes an onsite medical clinic, and security, as required, for the Mine, Port and Airport. The incumbent is responsible for implementation of specific regulatory, compliance or other safety sensitive requirements that apply to Red Dog, it’s assets and the safety of its employees. The Lead, Safety and Health will fill the role of the Safety & Health Manager as needed during the Manager, Safety & Health absences from the Property.
Responsibilities:
• Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
• Is the Second in Command (2IC) to the Safety and Health Manager, and acts in their behalf during their absence
• Directs day-to-day activities for the Safety & Health, and Medical Teams.
• Work with the Industrial Hygienist to establish occupational health and hygiene goals and objectives
• Set short- and medium-term goals and objectives for the Safety and Health Team, prioritizes those objectives and supervises the successful completion of those objectives
• Provide leadership, coaching, mentorship and evaluations of ten direct report employees
• Develop and sustains safety standards in compliance with governmental regulatory agencies and corporate standards utilizing regulations, applicable laws, codes and corporate guidelines ensuring a safe work environment
• Assist with developing, S&H annual budget. Conducts monthly cost review and maintains the S&H annual budget
• Identify, coordinates, facilitates, and records assessments of exposure from incident investigations
• Evaluate, develop, and implement Safety and Health techniques taking into consideration the occupational safety of the workforce and environmental liability.
• Provide written reports to management. Develops and maintains OH&H programs for health and safety, such as air monitoring, biological monitoring, hearing conservation and the respirator program
• Support the safe work training needs through a variety of resources; the analysis of inspection and audit data, incident investigation reports, statutory requirements, and other resources
• Identify unsafe work exposures and identifies preventative measures.
• Supervise and participate in facility security that meets Federal and State Regulations, which includes non-lethal and lethal methods
• Maintain a close liaison with government regulatory agencies (MSHA, OSHA, Coast Guard and Department of Homeland Security) ensuring prompt compliance with new rules and regulations
• Assist government inspectors in their investigations
• Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
• High School Diploma or equivalent is required
• Three (3) to five (5) years’ experience in an industrial operational Health & Safety Supervisory role is required
• Possess knowledge and understanding of Federal, State and Local laws and regulations regarding occupational safety and health
• Ability to conduct thorough investigations, determine causes and recommend or initiate corrective preventative measures
• Capable of providing written reports to management, supplying all pertinent information on safety performance and highlighting problem areas
• Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
• Experience in the mining industry is preferred
• Ability to work in a team environment and work effectively across all levels of the business
• Demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills
• Experience in Emergency Response and Incident Command is an asset
